Gents, I’m in need of changing my clutch friction plates.Well I think I am! I have the original bronze plates in the mk3 I’m rebuilding. I can get new sintered bronze plates from Andover £21.90 each, or Ferodo clutch plates from rgm at £11.50 each. Pressure plate and steel plates all look good. Are the sintered plates worth the extra money?Do I need to change the pressure plate for a thicker or thinner one If I go to the sintered plates, or will the std one be ok?
Any other things I should be looking out for with the clutch? Thanks.....

Measure the thickness of your old plates after cleaning them up and you'll likely find them to be serviceable. Afrer 45 years mine have only worn by 2 thousandths. The best thing you can do for your clutch is to adjust the stackup per this: http://atlanticgreen.com/ndnsclutch.htm

Wear is almost never the reason to renew the friction plates.
The bronze plate are best cleaned with a thin solvent and scrubbed with a wire brush and or scotchbrite.
Only if extremely neglected and slipped to burn the gearbox or primary oil which will carbon load the pores.
A clutch rod seal and primary oil level control is more important than the masses will acknowledge.
sorry for the ad but this may be the reason for now having sold over 7000 ccrs.

Please get them from my dealers the mail cost for one is prohibitive.

Yes, as Maylar and DD sez, clean and measure your bronze plates, use ATF in the primary 2 oz less than the spec, and install a
clutch rod seal. Only then should you think about new clutch plates if they slip under hard acceleration. I've read
about folks getting 100,000 miles of use from a set of original bronze plates. YMMV.

I have my original (within .001") "new" condition sintered bronze on steel plates resting in a box for my heirs to throw out.
Get Barnett fiber on aluminum plates and save your center hub while enjoying a great clutch.

If you buy a 5-friction plate set then there should be no need for a thicker pressure plate (as others have said, the bronze plates hardly ever wear out) however, it is possible for the clutch action to be improved by adjusting the stack height.

Not necessarily in the Mk3 primary as it doesn't seem to work with the hydraulic primary chain tensioner.
I would not recommend using less than the specified oil quantity in the Mk3 as it takes longer to prime the tensioner and with the tensioner full the oil level in the primary will be reduced.

Like you guys say, my original bronze plates are barely worn if at all. Bike only has 27k on it.where in uk can I get Barnett plates? Anyone know. The Ferodo ones from rgm look like fibre plates Anyone with any experience of these.?
