meanwhile...........my honda shadow aero cruiser bike appliance sits in corner of garage smiling the smug smile of the boring and plain vanilla sort of existence

Well at least my 850 & GL are smiling, but neither shall see pavement today..... punishment for oil spots.

running 50mph two miles then pulling into driveway and cutting off bike asap....the search for the Waffle House waffle golden brown holy grail sparkling plug color
If that 50mph was in 4th gear, then I can see the plugs being dark. I'm usually in 3rd doing 50mph. My plugs are grey, but I have yet to burn a hole in the top of the pistons. They use to be black, but I made a plug change. I run a hotter platinum plug with more reach than most, and don't use NGK. Not using Amals anymore either, but carburetion tuning is close to the same on every carburetor.

The clip being in the top groove when delivered doesn't mean a lot, but I get your reasoning for where you put the clip. I'd still try a shim under the clip, but that's just me. The clip position on the needle can make a difference 1/8th to 3/4 throttle. You fixed the bucking by turning the idle air mixture screw into to 1/2 turn. But, you still have black plugs. If you richen up the needle, open up the idle air screw, and use hotter plugs. It might help with that color.

It's hard to get waffle brown plugs with today's fuels, but a worthy goal. Good luck with it.

i confess i have never ridden the bike over 55mph or over 4500 rpm (country roads in 45-55mph range) maybe my riding style has something to do with dark plugs what if i go up a heat range to something liker N9Y but i dont want to burn hole in piston

Why not just use what the book says ?

Plug heat range should have nothing to do with overall temps in the combustion chamber. It just refers to how effectively the plug ceramic sheds heat to the air. A hotter plug retains heat while colder sheds more. This only effects how the plug electrodes accumulate carbon deposits.
Its the mixture that sets combustion chamber and exhaust gas temps. Too lean and higher temps risk damage.

And an S.U. carb right ? ;)

No pilot jets to clog up and perfect metering from the get-go.
Yup, the one SU on my classic mini is marvelously trouble free.
Just gots 'ta have one made smaller to fit on the Norton ;-)

"Bike Appliance" I love that term and that about sums up Hondas and many modern bikes, but what is the missing element ?

back to the subject....my 72 T120 and 68 A65 call for champion N3 but i could not keep them clean due to my putting around riding style so i went up one heat range to N4G and they work great so i have N4G in the norton and wonder if going up one heat range say to BP6ES would be safe i know two different brands but cross reference chart sez equal

The Phoenix kit uses the same SU as found (in pairs) on the V8 MGBGT... So essentially the same as used for a four cylinder 1750.. Nothing like erring on the side of caution, no? :)

Alan since you almost setting up to original , dismissing the pods, EI and whatever , why not try some higher octane fuel …. today I’m running 102 since dealer all out of 116 , I buy 5gal. of race gas and blend with HO pump , today it was half and half , first kick start , rock steady idle @1100 , with plugs the nice tan colour you search for …. lots of good advice above ! Remember one change at a time …. I saw your tractor run ,so no doubt you have this sorted in hours …..

Race gas should start a Norton by just staring at the Norton in anger.

When did Austin sell a Mini with 1 SU on it? Or is that an aftermarket solution for lazy tuners?
