need some new carbs, the amals never give reliable tick over week to week, and yesterday one jammed open on full throttle, leaving me with a 2 mile walk home up a very steep hill !!

Ive basically decided to either get a set of JS flatslides or a set of AMal premiers
Being in the Uk the amals are going to be quicker to get and cheaper,as the US shipping is $60,making the cost $525 for the flatsides
Also I read on a post about having to pay £72 import duty?,Ive not looked into this yet?
The amal premiers are £271

Although I do run a completely stock 750 and I do want to put twin carbs on ( I almost ordered a single last night when I eventually got home ! ) Im not too worried about it being either stock amals of JS ones with the k,n filters

Sorry long ramble over , does anyone know if the JS ones have a UK importer? and do I have to pay import duty ?

No tools?

If the package comes from outside the EU and has a customs declaration showing the full cost then the chances are you will be charged duty/VAT not just on the items but also the postage and any insurance costs. There may also be an additional 'handling charge' added by the courier. If it's Royal Mail/Parcelforce then they charge around £8.00

foolishly no tools, was only meant to be a test ride
could have been worse , i was halfway home !

thats a handy import calculator though, its looking like another £75 on top then in duties which will make them around the £400 mark shipped

Anyone going to the USA with a big suitcase :)

Personally I'd stick with new Amals. Simple to fit, adjust and they work great. Mine are as old as the bike and with new slides still work well, 700 rpm tickover and great pickup. I am sure you can get JS, Keihin's, Mikunis, Dell Ortos all to work but the number of posts on here about problems in getting alternatives to run right poses the question why bother, especially when new Amals will just bolt on and work, they also look right as well without horrible K and Ns hanging off them.

Not exactly made in the USA as they are modified PWK Keihins similar to the JS Motorsports

There is a little work around on the duty thing, if it was sent to you as a 'gift', there is no duty to pay - found this out when shipping stuff to my Mother in England. If there is someone in the states you trust, and if the math works out, get it shipped to them, then have them post it to you (around a birthday or Christmas maybe) as a gift. Worse thing that can happen is the customs don't believe it and you pay the duty.

Made in USA by JRC engineering, imported into the UK, cost only £84 each including VAT.

well thats a spanner in the works !
I was all set to order the Amals on Monday
these would do away with the ticler, which is messy to me,and £100 cheaper
downside is id have to mess around with jetting most likely

Tickle, tickle, kick "Bang". It's what gives us Norton riders another connection to our machines.

Ah, yes -the good old tickle- much more tangibly satisfying than flipping an enricheninger[ugh].

thanks for the link
Dad decided for me , I said i might be buying some non standard carbs and he simply said "why do you want to put modern carbs on it when you can still buy the proper ones for the bike?"

So i will be ordering 2 Amal premiers this week and I will keep you posted :)

You can buy tickler extensions for the Amals. I've used them. That way you can hold the tickler down until there is a puddle of gas on the ground if you want to without even getting a drop on your finger. But be careful if you have a magneto or early points behind the cylinder or excessive tickling can start a fire which will just go out quickly as long as you don't melt the fuel lines. If the fuel lines melt for whatever reason then things get hot, wild & exciting real fast (I've seen this happen).

Be sure to file down the new Amal slides so they don't stick wide open as you mentioned in your earlier post. When I worked at a Brit bike shop we used to have to file down the Amal slides on all the new bikes to keep them from sticking open when the new customer took them out for his first ride (liability factor).

Whatever you get - make sure its pre-jetted for your Norton or be prepared to put in some extra time doing it yourself.

I believe the Amal Premiers normally come fitted with hard anodised slides so I doubt that filing  the slides would be advisable and hopefully, shouldn't be necessary.

The Amal slides would stick because the carb would distort when bolting it on. If the bodies are the same - the same thing could happen.

Check out this wild video of a Amal equiped featherbed catching fire. Looks like the fuel lines melted and things got bad (about 1/2 way through the video). Looks like he had a problem with the fuel shupoff valve.

I haven't heard any reports of Premier slides sticking?
