Need Norton expert in Georgia to look at an unrestored Combat, it looks to be untouched, never apart, original paint, supposedly runs, goofed up frame plate, no title, and to top it off , zero feed baker bidding. Actually just wondering if anyone ever heard of this bike . I've been looking for an unrestored Combat in black for years, but this one has lot of problems.

" goofed up frame plate, no title, and to top it off , zero feed baker bidding."
Those are Red Flags, Jimbo I would tread carefully and insure this bike is not stolen.

I don't understand " zero feed baker bidding " other than the paper work , the bike looks pretty good to me from photo .... much better than the '72 I now own , looked first time I laid eyes on it .... good luck , hope it all falls into place for you ...

The zero bidder has made 3 bids in quick succession when he was the only bidder, either does not understand what an auction is or its a shill bid by the seller.

I'm betting on the latter :?

No title.
Says it all.
I would pass.

Re: Need Norton expert in Georgia to look at unrestored Com

no title is not a problem in Georgia... it's written into the law as the listing states.
A bill of sale is the requirement. A title can be applied for in Georgia with a bill of sale, then tax, title and registrations fees, proof of insurance, are required before it's issued.
Bought a 74 in Missouri with a bill of sale and went through the process. I didn't need a title, but since I'm originally from Illinois, I tend to like State verification of property ownership.

I'd go look at the bike for the O.P. but it's 2 hours each way from where I live.

Thanks for the offer. I would not want to put you out unless there was a reason for you to travel. But here's the rub. Someone stamped over the frame plate the digits 20 with the digits 19. The bike should have "20XXXX" on the paperwork, if a DOT officer would have to inspect it to get a title issued that would be a problem. If he didn't then all I would do is replace the data plate with a new correct numbered one once I bought it.If the paperwork reflected the proper number. You can still see the "20" underneath the "19" and the engine and trany match the original number. But the real question is why would anyone do that? The seller will not tell me.

FWIW, thru the eBay item "ask a question" feature, I asked the seller: "Hi, what is the ownership history of this bike? Bill".
His answer back was exactly this: "my sons school teachers dad bought it in 1973.thans chip".
Hope that might be helpful.

yea that's what he told me too :? He cant or wont explain the over stamping though :(,, When he first listed the bike he used the correct number( for the year and matches everything) off the motor "20XXXX" , but when I saw the frame plate photo and asked him about the butchery , he changed the listing to the restamped number "19XXXX" which complicates things also.

A survivor that it hasn't been stripped out and the parts sold separately if it were stolen. Steep price for that in my opinion.

Re: Need Norton expert in Georgia to look at unrestored Com

Well,...... things have changed relative to state registrations and state motor vehicle agencies since they have begun communicating by computer networking (around 2005, I think). So, if that bike has a title problem in some other state, you are not going breeze into the georgia DMV and get a title in 2016 without passing a check on their national database. If it was easy to get a title for this bike, the present owner would do exactly that and be selling a bike with clear title and ownership... which would make it more valuable.

Call your own Department of motor vehicles with the bike's VIN numbers and see what they say about the bike. there's a chance that they might be able to tell you if there will be some sort of problem getting a title for this bike.

*In 2006, I was delayed from renewing my driver's license for a third time in my present state, because the state I had moved from 6 years prior wanted me to pay a fine. I was told by the people here at washington state's DOL that this was only possible 6 years after I left because the all the state's only recently became part of a national database which prevents people from escaping payment of state fines and avoiding suspensions by moving to other states... It also prevents people from stealing cars and motorbikes and getting titles and registrations for them in other states.

well somebody else is bidding so I guess its going somewhere

Re: Need Norton expert in Georgia to look at unrestored Com

Frameplate is is the later type compared to the one on my '72 combat and it is attached upside down. Normal position is read from the left side of the bike with the VIN on the left side. My plate has top line Manufactured By then second line NORTON VILLIERS LIMITED.
Price even at $4300 doesn't seem out of line for current market. Low miles at less than 5000 on a combat can mean it blew up as that was the typical mileage if they went.
I bought mine in '97 for $1200 as a basket with 20,000 miles. This one is in better shape.

Wow, good observation on data plate! I wonder how that happened? The rivet's seem to be original, undisturbed. However there is no date stamped
