In order to get my new Andover Norton narrow mudguard to fit properly had to fit an Avon Speedmaster 3.00 X 19 . Only ridden a few hundred yards ,too busy with T160 but I am taking it out tonight.

No way would a 90/90 Avon road rider fit on the wm2 rin and clear the stays.

The part number is 06-0583 narrow blade the bike is 133*** 69 fastback , the other two are 71,72 models with the wider mudguards on roadrider 90/90 's. By fit properly , I mean the wheel is able to rotate freely and not have the tyre foul the stays. But it is possible that I just ballsed it up!

A ribbed 3.00 x 19 was the original front tyre type/size, so it's not all that surprising there's not enough clearance for a (3.9") 90/90 if you intentionally fitted an original type 'narrow' mudguard? :?

The early bridge and says are also shorter which adds to the problem.

The bike was fitted with narrow blade and 90/90 super venom which also fouled on the stays but nothing too serious . But the chrome was peeling and I had dented it with poorly fitting two into one exhaust headers so I sprayed it black however it looked like shit.

Mudguard looked OK from a distance. This photo was taken when the top end was on holiday at Mick Hemmings in 2012.
So I did intentionally want this particular set up. Give it a go tonight took her up to 80 felt OK and fine on the corners, not a bad old tyre.

Also good to keep in mind that the early narrow fender used different stays than the later wider fender. The space between the early stays is narrower than the later stays.

Ah! That's probably why I don't have a problem with the narrow fender (yes, the new SS narrow one straight from Andover). I was able to get the longer (later model) stays to fit.

Don't know how you made the longer stays fit on the early narrow mudguard? They're supposedly not compatible. The bridge is a full inch shorter than the one for the longer stays too. Must have bent something?

The parts listing is quite different for the S as you say Dave, short stays and specific mudguard.

It's possible the early Fastback bridge and stays are only narrower then, and not as short as the 'S'type.

What is the length of bridge (from the edge of the guard)?

I assume the bridge came attached to the new mudguard, so are new and old the same length?

4 1/4 from mudguard to hole center,I did compare the old and new and they did seem pretty much the same but it was a bar steward to get one of the stays on as the holes were not exact. As for deleting the photos , no problem I am quite used to it by now Les.

On my 1968 750 I have the stainless steel narrow mudguard from Andover. It is fitted with a Road Rider 90/90/19". Fits perfectly & gives very nimble steering.

In that case, the early Fastback bridge (and stays?) aren't really any shorter than the later type.

Sorry about that (it's complicated) but I managed to find them and put them back.

DogT, this was years ago but I think I did tweak the stays (including the riveted center mount) and raised the fender.

Here's the stays and bridge off my 69 S. I'm sure a lot of the 69/70 front mudguards got thrown away when people started fitting something larger than the 300-19 SpeedMaster II. The FB may have been different, I know the parts book lists a different part number. It's my understanding the 71 stay has a different curve at the bend than the S type, but I'm not clear on it, not having seen one.

A long time ago I asked AN if they had a front guard for the 69/70 model and at the time they didn't because they didn't have the drawing for the bridge. I told them I had an original and they asked for a drawing of my bridge which I supplied to them. I'm not sure what ever came of it but I did find out they did come out with a narrower guard for the FB, not sure about the stays and bridge for the S and 70 Roadster type. I finally got all my original parts fixed and used them.

Martyn.

I've also fitted the narrow guard to my 850 mk 3 "S type"
Have got 90/90/19 Roadrider. I haven't fitted the stays yet, but the original ones for the wide guard are too long, I'll get the shorter stays sooner or later. One thing I always do is drill out the horrible rivets on the guard/bridge and replace them with st st button heads.
