N15CS rear fender bottom bracket fitting help

A little fender, err mudguard bracket help please for my N15CS - I always strike out on the question: where does the front of this bracket attach on the frame? Is the orientation of the mounted one in the 2nd pic correct? Does it attach to the transmission mount bracket? The frame lug?

I don't have the bracket (seems out of stock everywhere) but can easily bend one up from steel stock. I just want it to be as per original. Every pic I have seen, whether on this very topic or on frames I have found online is obscured, never clearly shown or explained. I've spent way too much time looking, just hoping someone has an N15 or G15 and can take a clear pic for me.

Thanks - I got that one off eBay and it seems fine, just the rest is suspect. I also had to get a reproduction rear fender stay which fit, but the holes for the rear fender were not lining up well. If I add some spacers I can make them work, but then the front bracket won't fit. I think it's all par for the course. The best thing would be to get a reproduction non-drilled mudguard but I'll deal with what I have as mine's not too bad. The worst thing is that the hole where the seat mounts in the back is cracked. I put two washers and JB weld squeezed between to make it solid. It's just 'OK' to make things fit and work for now, and doesn't look so bad. Sometimes I just have to do what I can till the lottery billions hit.

By "the rest is suspect" I guess you refer to your fender and ancillary parts. If your fender is the early one made of aluminum, it can be reinforced by welding strips of shaped stiffening plates or sheet metal to the underside. By making the strips wider, they will allow you to re-position the holes. Existing holes can be filled using these sheet metal strips as backing material.

It's a steel fender. Seems to be original for this '66 (or early '67 possibly) bike. It doesn't appear to be mangled or distorted, but with the middle U shaped bracket with two bolts attached, the rear loop doesn't line up to the two holes, unless I use spacers at the rear to sort of stretch/lower how it attaches. ,It seems OK enough until I then try to attach the front bolt of the new bracket of the frame - it is about an inch too 'long' to line up with the hole. I will loosen it all up, remove spacers and see if I can figure out a way to make things fit. It just doesn't seem likely. Two of three attachment points, either middle/back with spacers, or middle/front are 'OK' but three will be tricky. A bit hard to explain.

I understand. One thing I noted is, are you aware of shims (packing) used with the U bracket? They are mentioned in the spares list (#029849). Also, examine the rear loop for possible deformations. I have a repro here if you need measurements.

If I were you, I'd start at the front end, then fix the middle bracket, and finally adapt the rear loop, if necessary. The loop and the mudguard itself are both vulnerable parts and may have distorted.

I have a genuine alloy rear fender off a '65 model here, in case you need to verify hole spacing etc.

Thanks Knut, yes my U bracket has the shims. I will try this way. My loop is a recently purchased repro as the one that came with the bike had been rewelded to an extreme incorrect angle.

I got it mounted, a bit of body English to make it line up.

Now my bike is basically done, but I am waiting on a paint job on the toolbox/battery cover to get finished - by the original painter that did the custom striping and stenciled lettering back in '94. He signed the oil and fuel tanks so I found him on Facebook and he was local.

Unfortunately he is really backed up and I have no idea how long he'll take to get me my parts back. I left him the oil tank for reference so that's the long tent pole right now.

Really nice guy living in Lake Elsinore CA, with a crazy cool garage with vintage pics and posters etc from 'On Any Sunday' vintage that made me confident of his MC pedigree. It's all good. But waiting is tough. Pic reminds me of an R Crumb drawing haha.
