Could anybody please help me, what/where does the side stand spring attach to on the bike?
A photo would be great ….I’m stumped!

Guys with that answer pass through the P11 forum once in a while but they might spend more time in the Other Norton Motorcycles forum. P11 and N15CS don't share the same frame or side stand.

Redfish; There is a small hole in the timing side lower rail of the frame. Probably covered with road grime. Sorry about no picture.

There is a post entered by gpzcat in the about non standard color schemes thread in the Commando forum that has an image near the bottom of the first page of what I think is the same frame as used on a N15. You can see what Northern Norton Nut is talking about. It will be hard to see with the primary cover on without getting your head nearly under the cover.

Thank you for the back-up. Also there are actually two little holes. The original spring had a squared off end to loop through the frame rail. And yes you need to get down and dirty to see them. NNN

Greetings, I'm not this site often but wanted to check in on this N15CS side stand post. I have a '64 N15CS on my bench currently ( and a couple P-11's) and I'm having side stand issues also.
I found 2 holes on the bottom of the left side front engine mounting plate. I think one of them is for the side stand spring but I'm not sure. when I attach the spring to either hole, the spring interferes with the side stand bolt preventing correct operation of the stand. I could not find the hole in the timing side frame loop that NNN talks about. I will look again in a few. Thanks guys.

BINGO!!! NNN you are the man!! I found the 2 holes on the timing side frame loop just aft of the engine mounting lug. Holes were covered with grease and paint but they are there.
I connected the spring to the forward most frame hole and then to the side stand and now have a working side stand!! THANKS!!
Next issue is locating a center stand and hardware.

Robert; If you will send me an e-mail I will send you a copy of an easy to make tool to mount the center stand spring. It came out of a now decades old Jampot of the AMC/Matchless club. I believe it would be referred to as a "dodge". It will save you a ton of bad words. northernnortonnut@gmail.com

I could also use that center stand tool info, will be sending an Email. A bodge perhaps, not dodge? But my Britishisms come by way of Australia so who knows.

Regarding the side stand, I'm looking for one. There are reproductions for Matchless from India listed sometimes for ~ $60 on eBay, and they give measurements, but unfortunately I don't know what's the proper length - 300mm? Also whether the number 014719 is stamped on an original stand - in case I find one used it would be nice to know it's the right one. I'm not used to paying over $150 for a used side stand, so maybe I'll be stuck with just a center stand for a while.

gpzkat; I measured two stand stands and they measures right at 12in. overall. I think that is about 300mm. I have never seen a p/n on one. No more Britishisms....I promise. Mark

Thanks for measuring. I will measure the width of the mount once I get back to the project, soon hopefully.

Due to the off-axis pivot, I think you need to clarify how your measurement was taken.

Good point, here's an example image of a 'made in India' stand that's listed on eBay, showing the measurements. Says it's AJS/Matchless so seems it's a possible fit, but of course it could be a bust/waste of money.

N15CS Prop Stand

There is a "thread" on this topic in the AJS/M Club's forum:

The prop stand mentioned in the thread is sold by the Club's spares service (p/n 900519) - they are out of stock at the moment. I believe that stand was cast in the UK and the bolt thread appears to match the OEM design.

Please note dimensions mentioned in the "thread" are not "along the axis of the stand". Dimensions were taken off the pivot point center, i.e. the hypothenuse to the footing and arm/footing intersection, respectively. Thus not compatible with dimensions quoted here unfortunately. If Mark could measure his stand the same way, we would have a basis for comparison.

To gpzkat I bought a stand like that for my 49 matchless but when folded up it went under the frame at 30 degrees , I fabricated my own stainless one . I think I have posted this on here before , I just made up the mount for the bolt and turned a tapered length and tacked it on when it was in the up position , weld grind polish .

Nice - make me one!. I don't weld sadly.

If you can gas weld you can tig weld , it doesn't need to look pretty , all of it gets sanded and polished .

I can't do either. A friend left me his gas welder when he moved, saying I could keep it, then he came back and took it, it's OK but I was disappointed as it was a pretty good setup and I even put an outlet for it outside. Well, I can get one eventually and learn, it's definitely something I should know.

Make up the pieces even steel is ok , you must know someone with a mig or stick welder , weld all the parts together , get it pointing in the right direction, add more weld if it isn't smooth , grind up with 40-60 flap disc, then sand smoother with a 120 , this is call fabrication , paint it .

Yeah taking this thread off track (sorry) - I'll learn to weld someday. Where I live nobody seems to work with their hands. I just bought a used one, hope it's good.
