Hi,
Sorry if I’m repeatting myself but reposting in case my last one was in the wrong forum category so have reposted.

Hi All,
I have been researching the numbers of a Norton N15CS I am considering purchasing and would really appreciate further help to confirm what I think. Basically it looks like a late 1966/7 bike and the gearbox is a Norton not a Matchless. As I understand it the frame and engine numbers should match but not necessarily the gearbox.

The Frame and Engine are matching numbers. 120823

Gearbox is NA15690G

Do these numbers look correct and if so what year would you expect the bike to of been built?

Further more, where could I get official conformation of the bikes origins?

Thanks for any and all help which as always is very much appreciated. I am no Norton expert and am relying very much on my own judgement. I have owned a 1976 Commando Mk3 since June this year and love it to bits. Never had a Norton or classic bike before but now hooked and hence looking for another Norton to put an even wider grin on my face

Regards
Phil

Tough one. Mine is said to be a '66, but that's from the seller and I have no title yet. It's matching #'s - 119799. I haven't checked the gearbox number. I think in some states it would depend on when it was sold, such things were a bit more loosey goosey back when. I was wondering if mine was actually a '67 so I am sort of in the same 'I don't quite know' place that you are, so if somebody chimes in with good info it would help me too.

Hi Mate, It really is a pain in the backside trying to authenticate these bikes as I am sure you appreciate. My Norton Commando Mk3 was easy but the hybids??????

Will try Mate but told they don’t hold any info on N15CS bikes. Hopefully that’s utter bolloxs

Big Phil; New Here, hope this helps. Have you tried the NOC webpage, https://www.nortonownersclub.org/ ? If not click on the HISTORY tab and there are two Atlas Hybrid pages listed. #1 is N/G 15 history, #2 is P11. The ‘hybrid’ factory records are with the AJS/Matchless Owners Club. Gearbox numbers are specific to each bike like the motor/frame numbers. Your motor/frame number looks like early 1967. The AJS/Matchless records should have a shipping date as well as the proper gearbox number. The records are not 100% complete however. Best of luck!

I agree Big Phil's appears to be early '67, the other post had a link I looked at and it's between Jan-May. Mine's a late 66. Good info thanks.

Mine is number 116875 and according to the factory records it dates from 14th March 1966 and was exported to Berliner corp in the States. There is information for numbers and dates in Roy Bacons book about Norton twins. NOC also do a records service.

Phil,
Your first stop should be the AJS/Matchless Owners Club. You may have to sign up with the Club, which is a good investment anyhow.

Hi Guy’s,
Thanks ever so much for the replies which have slowly but surely helped me confirm the bikes history. What a great forum

Hey, whilst I am on here what are owners of N15CS bikes thoughts on its reliability and what if any issues I should look for before I purchase. Again thanks in advance for any and all replies.

Best Regards
Phil

I’m sure there will be more than a few replies about purchasing so I will just relate that a commando oil filter can be fit in to the battery’s space and that 52 years on, many miles plus some track time and the rod journals are still standard. However any time the bottom end is apart the rods get new bearing shells. My filter installation swaps the filter out to the oil tank breather inlet and the engine breather line to the oil return pipe. Sweating a piece of 3/8 in. tubing to the breather elbow at the case makes the hoses swap straight forward. Please feel free to contact me at northernnortonnut@gmail.com . Mark

Phil,
The weak points are front break, primary drive (simplex chain), and clutch. Fork action is probably adequat but can be improved on. The magneto can be out of tune, some fire innaccurately. I prefer EI myself.
If you are looking for a tourer, the Commando M3S is better choice in most respects, I am sorry to say.

All IMHO.
