My First Issue

Can it be the result of an improperly sized spacer between the bearings?

I'm with BritTwit and FastEddie, while you have it apart anyway I would definitely compare the length of the bearing spacer to the distance between the bearing stops in the hub. Too short (or too long) and it's going to put increased lateral load on the bearings and overheat them causing premature failure.

I'm sure Stanley Lynde will do this when it's time to reassemble the wheel. He said it should have been checked when it was assembled the first time.

I'm not a 961 owner so not 100% familiar with the setup, but one thing that puzzles me is that from the pics you posted it looks as though only the sprocket carrier bearing failed. If that is the case the wheel shouldn't have been wobbling around, only the sprocket. Or has the other bearing blown as well?

The other bearings are good. To be clear, it wasn't a consistent wobble. More like intermittent tugs left and right.

It may be a trick of the light, but those cush drive bushes look to be inserted at different heights, one at least appears to be proud, while the other are recessed. I guess that could also cause runout on the sprocket carrier and load the bearing due to misalignment if it can't seat fully on the hub. (Especially if it happens to get overtightened)

The cush drive rubbers float. I can push them in completely with my finger so I don't think that was a problem.

I am mostly worried about the rough edges here. This damage would require the whole wheel to be replaced.

The fact the other two bearings are fine makes it even stranger, don't you think?

Difficult to tell form the picture, but as long as the damage didn't get too close to the circlip groove I reckon you should be ok. Perhaps rotate the circlip 180º ? taking the opening away from the deepest area of damage. Or has the edge been raised up?

Cheers,

cliffa

I'll let Kev tell me what to do about this part. Stanley only checked to see if the other two bearings rolled freely. He didn't really look at the scratching and wear around the edge. It is not raised. Just rounded down. If it doesn't present an issue then I can live with it - it is not visible. :|

hello everyone
i would like to point something out, there is a process to follow regarding warranty, and it has to be dealt with via an official Norton dealer, In this case i have pointed out to Peter that the wheels are still covered, and the issue will be addressed. it is important that all the information is gathered first to make an advised decision. i would also like to point out these are aftermarket wheels assembled by the supplier. so Norton has no control over the QC, and that there are thousands of bikes fitted with these wheels without issue.
i would suggest that in future, if anyone requires assistance that they follow the correct procedure and wait for a response before they decide to make a big thing about it on the forum !
if you are all members of this forum because of your interest of love of all things Norton then maybe you should consider the effect of an unecessary negative post ?

Thank you for all your help, Kev. I should also point out that my 2015 961 Sport has had very few issues thus far and all of them have been minor and easily remedied. This first major problem I've encountered was unfortunate, but should not be attributed to Norton UK's quality control. I am definitely encouraged by that.

It's been 2 months since my wheel bearing failed. It took a little over a month to get it diagnosed and logged as a BST/Norton warranty issue. Since then another 4 weeks have elasped. Just thinking it might be time to contact MCC to see if they know where my wheel is. There's only 6 or so weeks of warm days left.
