“As my oldest kid realized listening to music helped her stay on track with tasks, she wanted more and more screen time ‘just to listen to music,’ but then became inevitably distracted by everything else on a tablet.

I bought her a small boom box with an AM/FM radio, a tape player, and a CD player. She explores my partner's and my CDs from the crate in the basement. She has favorite radio stations.

After buying the same boom box for her brother, I heard her explaining to him that it was how you got around Mom and Dad's screen time rules to still listen to things. She showed him the audiobooks section at the library. Sometimes they go to each other's room to share music.

It’s hard to make decisions as a parent. This one remains my happiest and easiest parent tip for grade- and middle-schoolers.” — Amanda
