Basic idea is that when rear wheel thrust is limited by wheel spin, or by wheelie/front wheel lift, such that engine power through the rear wheel can contribute no more, convert the exhaust pipe's exhaust into jet thrust .

BTW, Ducati's front fairing mounted "winglets" were banned. Was that because they work?

My guess is it has absolutely nothing to do with thrust and everything to do with exhaust tuning. There's not enough push available to make up for the possible loss of power. The bs about jet power is just to throw the competition off course.

Winglets were banned due to possible contact with other machines and possibly riders, causing accidents and/or injuries. Yamaha now have enclosed winglets in their fairing.
