Morgo UK Any Good?

When fitting a Morgo rotary pump to a Triumph, the pressure relief oil passages need to be opened up to deal with the extra flow being released.

This leads some to conclude that they’re kinda a waste of time.

But all that extra oil sloshing around does have a positive impact, it helps the engine run cooler.

I discovered this on a race bike that was struggling with heat.

So folk with tuned engines, or those that tour hard mountains fully laden, or those in hot climates, can still benefit from these pumps, not only the racer boys.

It’s the bleeding issue that puts me off of using them on my road Triumphs.

I’ve seen the ball valve dirt problem happen once, on a friend’s bike, on first start after a rebuild: no oil pressure! And the dirt wasn’t even visible when I opened the pump up.

On the other hand, I’ve been riding and fixing my 650 since 1992 and never had an oil pump problem.
You've put your finger on the cause of my old anxiety - even with a primed sump and everything, it still takes an inordinate amount of time for the return to start flowing on a rebuilt motor - I've shut engines down on a number of occasions because of this, even when it's been OK.
My TR6C still has the original plunger pump, but as it's going to be a Sunday posing machine - with an oil pressure sender - I'll live with it.

No, it's those effing ball valves!
 
Apparently the dirt often gets introduced to the scavenge system when the sump drain is removed without careful cleaning.

John saw huge numbers of Triumphs being serviced.

On an oil change, you can empty the usual teacupful of old oil from the crankcase by starting the engine (after refilling the oil tank!) with the scavenge hose led into a jar.
 
After finding bits of road grit in oil drained from a wet sumped bike, (Norton) I now put the drained oil through a strainer if it is going back in the bike.
I can pretty much guarantee that folks who drain the oil and just dump it back in, as I used to do, are putting oil with shards of stone into their oil tank.

Given this has morphed into a Triumph oil pump thread, Surprised no-one has mentioned the later 4 valve plunger pump Triumph introduced in 1980 or thereabouts. Any debris under a ball valve doesn't stop the pump working and it flushes the debris away. Also I hardly ever remove the sump plate as it stays clean with a remote (commando) filter on the scavenge side.
In terms of Morgo, I'd have happily fitted their big bore kit on my T120, but hate the way they mirror the "delta" head shape onto the cylinders, purely an aesthetic issue for me. I have one of their oil pressure gauges on the Rocket 3 and it's nicely made.

Yep I fitted the 4 valve pump to my t140e when they came out
Had to grind a small amount out of the timing cover I seem to remember
 
Just got my item (oil pressure gauge kit for Commando) from Morgo. Looks to be a nice kit. Never did get a response to my 3 message attempts, one just after submitting my order thinking they might only respond to actual customers. Was trying to request them to declare my items as duty exempt for Canada imprt as they qualify as for vintage/antique automotive use. Any how, seems no duty are charged, only standard GST/PST....plus a new "Service Charge" of $10 CAD. First time I've ever seen that from postal imports....only seen it on DHL/FedEx imports as "Brokerage" fees.

Well, I'm not overly impressed! Kit looks good, good quality. It is sold for Norton with a handlebar mount clamp:

Issue is that this clamp cannot be positioned around my handlebar such that the gauge face is near the same horizontal plane of the other clocks. There is insufficient clearance between the top yoke and the bar for the clamp to rotate....needs to rotate almost 90 degrees from the image above orientation, putting the clamping flanges well between bar & yoke. Trying to mount gauge on the diagonal section outside of the yoke clamps makes the straight back protruding oil line connector interfere with the fork top cap and the gauge face still not close to parallel with the tacho/speedo.
And with no response to my 3 messages prior/at purchase, looks like I'm on my own with no recourse.

Will need a custom fab'd attachment bracket I guess....
