I thought this was interesting. I have not ridden the 850 for at least 5 months. The oil tank completely empty. Did a movie of first start up after wet sumping. It amazed me how much the engine moves up and down when starting a wet sumped motor. Here it is and had a nice 60 mile ride in Colorado. Snow melted, nice to get out. Some pics after the movie:

I think I am going to take that rack off. Does anyone want to buy it state side?

Are you worried about blowing out the crank seal doing that? If you drain a little from the primary (assuming you're using ATF) and it comes out dark...

I don't recall why you took off the breather but a sump full of oil getting pressurized means the oil needs to go somewhere.

I am not too worried about blowing out the oil seal on mk3. I have a special oil seal in there and it’s held in with circlip. Would be more worried about doing it on 750. I was too lazy to take the oil out...

I know you are going to ask me about the seal. I bought a bunch of them in 2011. They have a ribbed outer edge to lock in. I can’t remember where I got these, other than it was UK. I still have some and will try and find them to take a pic...

I checked and oil level in chain case is normal.

And what happened to the breather?

I had a Mike xs breather fitted. I honestly don’t think it made much difference. The breather came out of the timing chest and it was connected between that and the oil tank. Ultimately I will get one from Kenny. That will work. I am riding the MK3 this summer or until BSA is done. Then it’s coming off the road to have some head work done. I finished that bike in 2013. I have about 15k miles on it. Pretty much trouble free. Lots of thrashing. I have a crack in the r/h side of the head, exhaust that leaks a little bit. Very annoying. It’s an RH4 head and they are weaker there I believe, plus it was heavily ported.

I must admit I am much happier on my 750. Far more fun and faster...

You will love the one from Kenny.

Lovely bike Jerry. Really nice rack but I can see why it's going - it doesn't really suit the Roaster look does it ? (Neither do the mudflaps in my opinion).

By the way have you noticed there is a strange kink in your lower chain run in one of the pictures. Maybe a seized link?

Cheers,

cliffa.

Thanks I will check the chain. I think it’s the joining link.

I thought I needed a rack in CO to carry leggings etc. changed my mind on that. Will take Harley if it comes to that. The mud flaps are needed here. Stops the motor getting covered in crap. I don’t like the look of them, but they work very well.

That is a question I have pondered for a little bit, how long does it take for the oil to drain into the engine from the tank? a week? a fortnight? a month? overnight?

guess I will find out as the one I filled and ran about 2 weeks ago, I will check out in the weekend and see if the tank is empty hehe

It varies depending on the bike. Some bikes it will be a few days, other months. Others... never.

I thought the MK 111 model would be exempt from wet sumping issues due to the integral piston valve in the timing cover.

I wish, it does not seem to make much difference. Bear in mind it was sitting for 5 months though

It does help to reduce the rate of drainage but doesn't necessarily stop it completely as oil can still drain from the feed side of the pump to the scavenge and then to the sump unless the pump seal modification has been done.

Thanks for the Vid Jerry. And there you have it folks, in less than 2mins everything was back to normal. Wet sumping is not really an issue to worry about yet we have countless threads on it. If you are worried take the time to see if your oil is returning and move on .

Let's see him kick the engine over with that full sump...

He wont be doing that
If it's like my bike I have a hard time even with a breather moving the oil out. I can kick for a while and about the time I'm exhausted I sometimes have it cleared enough it will spin and start. But just relying on the pump to clear I don't know if I'm young enough to pull that off.

On the Mk3 I have serious starting power thanks to cNw.

Upgraded starter motor
Larger starter wires and ground
The new sprag setup

I have lots of battery power too. Never misses a beat. Even after 5 months without charging the batteries
