Hello,

I am refitting my primary. I cannot remember which way the sprag goes in. On Freds site (Old Britts), it says flange side goes in first. Yet in my Clymer Norton book it says Flanged side faces out. which is the correct way?

I had an annoying leak from primary, not bad, just annoying drip. This is what I found:

1) Center stud sheared just behind inner primary. Rear engine mount bolts too loose so that could have cause the stud breaking issue.
2) The gear cross shaft was bent so it was not running in the center of the seal and it was dripping oil from there.

I have about 12K miles on my MK3 since the rebuild with hardly any issues. Got through 2 Tri-sparks though (Pazon next time). I stripped the gearbox drain plug the other day, so I did my first helicoil with success (easier than I thought it would be). So I am going to change the turn signals and fix the front brake light switch and then back on the road with new oil.

Fit the sprag and the large starter motor crank gear [19].

If correct, the large starter drive gear [19] should become locked to the crank when the gear is turned in the normal direction of crank rotation (anti-clockwise/counterclockwise as you look at it from the left) and freewheel when turned clockwise.

Jerry,
If you plan on switching to OEM turn signals Waldridge motors has them with correct Lucas markings. I got the short shaft ones for the front and regular length for the rear. I am not sure if I had to call Mike or they were listed in the catalog.

Hi Jerry. If your bolts between engine and g/box frame have been loose then you are likely to find the holes have worn. Although the cure is probably boring them out and fitting bigger bolts, I didn't have the necessary tools to do this so I shimmed the holes and had to wind the bolts in. If it isn't too late or too difficult, I recommend you do the same. You may end up having to unadjust the rear chain when you do this.

Thanks for the replies.

I already have the turn signals. I am going to use the same ones as on my 750. They are small and out of the way. I'll post a few pics of the bike with them on.

Holes are not worn on the engine plates so its ok. Just loose bolts and they were not that loose. That was the only thing I can attribute to shearing the center stub bolt, or maybe corrosion or both. The isolastics are right on. Almost got the primary together again.

Thats my office, our laundry room and most importantly Norton area lol

Here are a couple more pics. Cant wait to get the MK3 back on the road. I miss it, cheers

Hi Jerry, Bike repairs inside your house. That's luxury for you. My wife would have a fit if I did that.
All the best Dereck

My wife has even threatened to clean out some of the goodies I have collected over the years. Our group is running NZ"s Nash Hash during the weeken of 10th -13th Feb, and she talked about getting a bin in that weekend. Sheeeez. We have 3 have unused bedrooms in our house. What else does she want. My garage is only a 2 car and has all my equipment including the 2 commando's and my 22 Dodge.
You lucky bastard as we say. [ that Aussie for good on yer mate as well ] Mind you our President called ma a lucky bastard when he heard I had no real problems with my Commando during the 3145 mile excursion round NZ. He developed and stick inlet valve while climbing the Rimutakas near Upper Hutt. Poor bastard.

Who says I wasnt.

Hey Jerry. be careful not to mark your tiles with metal objects. Even aluminium will leave a mark that wont come off in a hurry, if at all.
