Firstly I'd like to thank you all for your help.
The advice and especially the pictures were invaluable. Especially the pictures that you took of your own bike's sections, I know that some parts were removed to get clear pictures of the bit I needed to see. Thank you.

Now there's a couple of things I still need to sort out.

1. How to get the keys from Toni, my missus, so I can ride it too.

2. I fixed 2 oil leaks from the exhaust rocker covers and now the tacho cable is leaking.
I don't have a pcv fitted, could the oil just find the next weakest place to leak?

3. Do you check the oil level with the cap fitted tightly, or just sat ontop of the oil tank?
with it sat on top of the tank it reads 1/2 way between full and low.
with it screwed down it reads full.

Both of those areas are prone to some leakage (although they can be cured) so I wouldn't worry too much about leaks at this stage.

Normally I would check the level with the cap fitted tightly, rather than resting on the top (as you would do with more modern bikes that have screw-in dipsticks?).
 
Thanks L.A.B, I had changed the oil and filter at 50kms and filled the tank to 1/2 way between low and full with the cap sitting loosely and it spat some out the breather.
Tacho weep fix?

That looks like a grand job you've done there! (but, no grab rail?).

How many O-rings are fitted on the tacho drive spindle?
The parts book shows only one 06-5203 O-ring, although I believe two (the normal one and thinner one above it) were fitted, however, the drive housing can be modified to take a proper oil seal, which normally cures the problem if the double O-rings don't work.
 
Superb job. That's lovely. The Interstate markings look perfect.

The tach drive o-ring leaked on my bike within the first 2 years of it's life. A poor design IMO. Leaks from there make a horrible mess, it'll blow all over your right foot (AMHIK). I would install a cheap breather valve (motormite) asap. Then get the drive housing modified for a propper oil seal.
 
Fantastic job, it looks absolutely brand new.

My poor 75 has been run through the wringer, but I still love it. The peashooters have started to go dull on the topsides, the rear mudflap is torn, and the front one has fallen off altogether. Accummulated fuel drips from tickling have stained the carbs. I just wish i could wake up and it looked just like yours!
 
GRM 450 have you ever met with REG? He used to be on this site and had a couple Commandos. He lived in Brisbane.

No, never met REG, there not many Nortons in Brisbane. There probably is in sheds and garages, but you don't see many on the roads. Shame realy.
Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places.
I've seen 2 red Commandos, a Mk3 and a Mk2, and a fastback.

L.A.B, I have the grab rail but didn't fit it. I wasn't sure if it would look nice and it won't get used. (I'm not sitting on the back, and my wife rides so she's not a pilion)

Graeme, have you posted a "before" photo of your bike? You might be int eh running for "Most Improved of 2009" if it was pretty scruffy when you started in on it...
 
Well when I was there Reg scared a few out one of the best rides I have ever done.

Hello Norsba, no, I don't recognise Reg. But I'll keep an eye open. The bikes will stand out. Very nice.

GP, here's a couple of before pics. Not assuming that this rebuild was anywhere near the marathon of Basketcase71's. ( or the fellow in the UK with the bike that looked like rust holding hands )
All the bits you don't see were the worst, frame, forks, engine, gearbox, wheels, brakes, the list goes on.

Graeme, sorry. that "before" picture is a step in the direction i'd like to go with my 75 at the moment! hee hee
