Mk111 Project

Polished up primary side of nicks and scratches. Spun bike around to do timing side now, yah. Work.

Rolled the MK111 out into the sun 2 1/2 years after shattering my ankle. Got her running roughly , left cylinder only. Cleaned out the right idle circuit with my trusty banjo wire and some Carb Medic fluid in there to soften up the clog. Then the older model Tri-Spark unit died. It smelled like toasted electronics when I used it 2 1/2 years back , and checked continuity to it , ign. circuit is strong to it with new battery , so pulled it today. Will fit a Boyer unit I have and see if I get spark tomorrow. One thing or another.

Bike out on street , covered. Not running. Will change out ign. when the crippling heat dies. No spark. I need to buy a garage or something for it in the countryside. Not possible in Toronto .

Project is dead in the water. Realize I have a short somewhere after wiring up the 2 new Smiths Electronic gauges. Bad instructions so I will be cutting wires to then to stop the fuse blows. Need garage.

I can relate to needing a garage. I barely have room to park my Mklll out front or the place we're renting at the moment. I miss my Houston house and its garage and back yard. Raining quite a bit here in Japan at the moment

Update: Both sMITH'S E-GAUGES UP AND RUNNING

Both E-Gauges to date up and running , LED headlight up and running , thanks to Derek Wilson of Ontario Norton Owners and his knowledge of elektrickery. Big air temp drop has me wiring in the electric vest power take-off now.

Been a while , Covid update, Lockdown in Ontario. Received new primary hardened gears ,sprag, clutch center from CNW. Mid January so may have to wait until spring. Installed new air horn (Steibel) to side of bike but looks like an afterthought , I'm going to try fitting it where the original horn was placed. It's a large horn with integral compressor and very loud. Used it once on the 401 with a lane drifter and he jumped back into his lane. Derek Wilson has one so I was impressed.
Bought a rear rack ,stainless , from U.K. for all the camping coming up this 2021 season. Support arms were cheap and thin which broke promptly after install so contacted seller and I was mailed stronger clamps to rear frame loop.
Ordered in new Wassell 32 mm. carbs and Progressive springs today.
Sprayed Corrosion Block over all metal and put cover back on. Battery out of course. It's been a mild winter with little snow so far and milder temps.

Yes , that's the baby. I love the quality but the support (2) clamps to the frame loop are dodgy. Even the new ones as requested and supplied are not well thought out re: angling , but stronger. So I'll try it all out this coming up riding season.
Do you have a pic for the stronger ones supplied?

FOUR MkIII resto projects going in this forum at the same time!

I think it's a record.

Although, this build thread is SADLY LACKING in photos for quite a while...

Tore apart the primary yesterday . Went smoothly on the street in +3 C. , Glad I did it because the sprag clutch fell into pieces on the ground. This was the 18 roller type with a shockingly thin retention cage that was snapped in 3 places. I'm surprised it was engaging at all. So this helps explain why it would just spin freely when cold and engage when above 15 C. It was making a rattling sound too at certain R.P.M. 's. At least it worked. I drove to Manitoulin island and back fully loaded , using it in that state !
All primary parts cleaned and examined. Safely in ziplocks. The 2 surfaces where the sprag engages look good ,no ridges , wavey surfaces or dimples or scoring from the broken sprag. The goodies parts are ready for install. CMW clutch center tapped into chainwheel , CNW front sprocket with it's thicker cage 14 roller sprag ready to go.
The clutch nut was slightly loose on the mainshaft . Held in place though by the too soft fold-over tab washer. So I'll find a better washer and Loctite it. First the crummy crushable clutch locator circlip has to go and get replaced by the stronger starter motor retention one. It will have to be thinned down a bit to fit tightly into the mainshaft slot.
-5 C. now for a while so no work to do.
New Wassell carbs came and are set up ready to install. Original have been removed and 2 small plastic bags pushed into intake ports to keep out winter. Garbage bag around open empty primary , same reason. Cover back on bike , Jan. 23 2021 . No snow , never seen that here for this time of year.

If, as it looks like, the rack only fastens to the rear frame loop when two up you will have a limited luggage capability. A decent rack assembly should have a support leg down to the rear footpegs. You don't want to bend your frame.

What about the two legs at the back? Still needs the brace down to the Z plate though. Nice looking rack, for sure

This would be an afterthought for support as none supplied or mentioned with this small rack. I use it for sleeping bags only and move the bigger weight as far forwards as I can get away with. Tomorrow I remove and replace the 21 tooth sprocket as the tooth teeth look sharp pointed at their tips. The new one I have has visibly more meat. Chain looks to be sloppy too. Have a new Reynolds Blue box one too.

Today I examined the Renolds 99 Link chain I pulled out in a blizzard. Came off easy , no need to pull off the rain/snow cover , just reached up under and fed it back , no 21 tooth sprocket to deal with as I tossed it into recycling. We live in a LEED certified arts building so we have recycling everywhere , no smoking , no chemical fertilizers. I have 2 organic gardens here .
The new 21 tooth is ready . Went to a known sunny spot corner with power and my Dremel cutter disc tool to cut pins on the new IWIS chain down to size. It's a beautiful German quality chain , very hard metal , better than the Renolds motorcycle blue box chain I also had ready to cut to size. I compared the lengths of new to the used one and the Renolds showed less than 1/2 inch stretch (wear in my books ) so I cleaned it and saved it using a disposable plastic pan, Dunk cleaner , a plastic scrub brush and a bucket of soapy water as a final . Hung it up to dry , indoors. Into a plastic zip lock should it ever be needed.
Bagged and labelled the final primary bits for spring install. I'm trying to have everything ready to go including all the tools , in bags ready.
