Mk111 Project

Glen I will try A.T.F. fluid as part of the engagement temps. comparisons experiment. When I bought the bike it came with a box of extras , one being a ziplock with 6 tensioners showing wear but not yet completely worn out. I've drained the oil and it was black from tensioner slipper block material. One would think if the piston-hydraulic end was not taking the oil well the result could be slopping chain noises.

Hang in there! I hate to hear of Motofolk busted up. I had really enjoyed your posts here and following your progress with the bike. I've got a MK3 as well, seemingly the red headed step child from Norton. I've not had any issue with my starter system yet. The sprag was replaced and new prestolight starter added, other than that it's all original w/ 5 or 6000 miles. I'm scared of what else I'm in for with it down the road and fearful buying a MK3 bike may cost me more in the long run.

Get to healing up, try not to buy too many parts online as its oh so damn easy!

Thankyou for the Spending control advice. We are all well aware of Norton parts need and wish orders escalating to wow status if left unchecked. On that note I immediately asked a friend here in Toronto if I could get in on his next batch of hand cut and welded and assembled motor stands in Powdercoated Red. :D . Just returned from Western where they did x-rays and
a look-see with the doctor who showed a shattered fibia and Tibia lower but the ankle joint looks good as well as the foot. One doctor thinks it was a sideways strike consistent with the extendable fold away foot portion swinging back wildly hitting the 2 bones . His Theory. The Friday morning surgery will fit 3 plates with cast and 6 weeks in it , elevated whenever possible. :)

Back in the day when I worked for a living .... I suffered a leg break ,both bones just above ankle and one bone just below knee .... surgery with bolts installed and you know the drill for six weeks ... then surgery to remove bolts ... then physio ... break was March 15th ... return to heavy construction job June 1st .... so hang in there won't be long and you will be jogging again ... I don't believe temps are your problem .... physics does not support your theory , sorry
Craig

Back to my too-far-from my fingers reach MK 111 AP Racing fitted master cylinder issue . Contacted R.G.M. who feel the 050429 lever was likely as supplied with the bolt-on kit. It certainly looks the same as the advertised photo. Does any other MK 111 owner have a solution to this ? Is there another lever out there that will fit it , in polished aluminum with a stock look ? I'll get help posting a photo soon but remember I am in a wheelchair. I don't want to have the lever cut ,re-positioned closer and re-welded to achieve this.

B.T.W. I contacted the bike's builder who informed me of it's winning at least 8 Awards. Best in Show and Best British Bike several times. So this made my day ! Pics soon.

Double-posted so please read the previous post on the previous page. . Different subject question.

You need a dogleg lever, like Magura. May need a tad bit of modification for it to fit...

Tough call on the lever. Lawrence of R.G.M. replied stating he felt their improved lever would probably not work . I thanked him for the honesty as it would be 51 pound plus shipping and duty. So I pulled the stock lever and filed down the fulcrum point where it touches the M.C. piston itself. Seems to get the handle closer to the grip with 4 fingers involved now. In spring I will give it the driving test , if not happiness then will look for a dog-leg type lever at a local motorcycle wrecker that fits in the spring when shops re-open again.

Couldn't you take that one off and file the tang that pushed the cylinder? Might have to add a similar amount on the stop tang. Some good epoxy should do that trick. Or a small allen threaded in?

Thanks. I filed down the brake lever tang to get the lever to be closer to the grip as suggested. Should work come spring. :)

The motor is smoking , as purchased. The motor smokes badly intermittently , meaning sometimes no smoking then say 10 mins. later badly for 20 mins. then back to no smoking. Both plugs are oily. I'm going to have to pull the head as a minimum. I built a cardboard protective box today to place the tank into to protect the paint as first step is to pull the seat and tank before pulling the head for inspection. It's a .20 overbore. I'll look for an oily headgasket and then valveseals first. Wish me luck.

Keith Newton here in Toronto did the rebuild. No way to contact him I am aware of. I don't want to place blame here .. but she's a heavy intermittent smoker. Probably cancer . Ha. There is a welded up R. side case hole. I never noticed it in my enthusiasm to purchase a cosmetic and 8 time original show winner. Later , I found out it blew a T. side rod. It needed the small weld to the case. It needed an undersize crank grind and .20 pistons. Both plugs black evenly , and oily evenly. I'm hoping at best the intake seals are shot. I'm hoping it's oil flooding from reversed rocker shafts. RH4 head could be cracked by bad intake guide install too but both plugs oily. Bad headgasket ? X 2 unlikely. The MK111 has a vapour recirculation system so ? Once I parked it running on the sidestand and lots of blue smoke from the right exhaust. If I level it, blue smoke from both. But I can drive for awhile with no smoke. Sounds like head -floodings. Drain passage blocked ? Tomorrow I will pull the tank and prep for a head pull. Labour.

Forgot to mention Joe Peck ,myself and Jack Sennett took a nice drive out to visit Rick Harritt at Highway Cycle today. Saw a lot of Triumphs and Nortons and BSA 's all in various stages of repair. The best was a long poem , outside in the spring sun before leaving . We clapped ,then went for food and booze in Waterdown.

Private seller , no guarantee written. When we started it up and it smoked he said probably needs new seals. I said probably or likely needs a valve job. He said I can help you with that , the implication being costs seeing as he is in another city. He's a good man , honest and careful. I recently told him I will not re-insure the vehicle until this is fixed. That's where it stands.

Sorry, I thought the situation was that the engine had just been overhauled (recently), and was now smoking.

If it was sold and bought with the understanding that it was smoking, no harm done.
