I am trying to get the starter for my MK III working again (wiring for the entire bike was a mess when I got it). The solenoid has four terminals. One from the negative post on the battery to a large post on the solenoid. Another from a large post on the solenoid to the side lug (I think) on the starter. From there I am a bit lost.

The wiring diagram shows two wires from the loom. One (white/red) and one (white/purple) I assume these go the the smaller lugs on the solenoid. Does it matter which wire goes on which small lug?

Also, the parts manual shows another wire I am not sure of. It is listed as 06-5909 / Lead, Earth, Starter. I am not sure where this lead goes.

Does anyone have a diagram of what wire goes where? :(

Hi, The 06-5909 wire you mentioned runs between the rear nut on the engine at the primary side just in front of the starter fixing point and the battery earth terminal. The white /purple wire you mentioned runs from the ballast resistor to the soleniod, but isn't used on electronic ignitions. L.A.B. gives a good description of what the wires do in a thread I started about wiring, page 6, 9th post down and carries on into page 7 for wire positions.

In case you can't locate it;
Just to ensure the rest of my starter wiring is there, on checking it should be::
Positive earth, electronic ignition fitted,
1 heavy wire from rear engine bolt to battery positive,
1 heavy wire from battery negative to solenoid,
1 heavy wire from soleniod to connection on top of starter
1 white /red wire from start switch, R/h bar switch cluster, to soleniod.

Thanks,
That is about what I decided, I just wanted to hear someone else say it too. I have already let the smoke out of one wiring loom and didn't want to do that again. :D

The White/Red wire goes to the spade on the left hand side of the solenoid.
