I am installing the original Prestolite starter on my MK III after many years. I had it professionally rebuilt about 24 years ago and it has been in a clean, dry location ever since. Now I am introducing this starter to my machine for the first time under my ownership. I installed the starter yesterday but have not hooked up the cable. My curiosity led me to check the resistance going from the lone negative lug on the starter to chassis ground and it reads zero ohms. To me this is a dead short. Positive ground has me positively confused. Can anyone shed light as to whether this is "normal"?

Yes, it is normal, nothing to do with it being positive ground.

Like LAB said, normal. The windings on the starter are large enough gauge that they present a very low resistance. You would have to have a very sensitive ohmmeter to be able to measure them as anything more than zero.
