So last Saturday we went to our club meeting. While there I noticed one of my new mesh inspection caps missing. Well, bugger. Could my luck get any worse? (Don’t answer that!)

Missing Inspection Cap: Found!

I drove the route later that day on the off chance I’d see it laying in the road. It was a long shot and it didn’t pay off.

When I got home I remembered between myself and @Mike T we had three cameras rolling on the ride. Mike scrubbed through the footage and found the moment when the cap came off.

Well, I finally went back a week later and...

Missing Inspection Cap: Found!

Exactly where it came off in the footage. I was surprised no one picked it up but it was against the curb and not visible from the sidewalk.

Is my luck changing? Probably not but one less thing to worry about.

Thanks @Mike T !

You should have ridden straight to the nearest lotto ticket vendor and spent all the cash you had in your pockets...

Exactly, a repost but when I bought an H2A back in the mid 90's (still have it) for $1700 (iirc) I thought on the way home I probably payed $200 to much, stopped and got a Lotto which won $700 and change.
$1000 H2A ?

Two schools of thought here; you presented one well. The other is that Swoosh used up all his luck and might be better advised to stick with certainties for a bit... Do you feel lucky?

Best.

I never feel lucky. Sometimes I feel fortunate to have good friends to help me out and to go on rides with. And friends who are avid YouTubers and film everything. :)

I'm so glad no sarcastic g*t has turned round and said: 'Something else not tightened properly, then?'

But we're nicer than that, yes???

On a serious note, was it on an 'O' ring or fibre washer???

Long time ago my MK3 stopped halfway between Red Bluff and Redding, fuel pouring everywhere. The drain plug from one of the Amals had come out. This could have been an absolute disaster but by a MIRACLE it had lodged in front of the starter motor.

There were no o-rings supplied with the caps so I assumed that they didn't need them. I did transfer over one of the stock o-rings and it made no difference. I'm just going to locktite the buggers in. With rear sets and a dry primary it's far, far, far faster to under the center nut and take the cover off than to try to fiddle with a cap.

It is not recomended to use loctite on large diameter fine threaded objects, it will become extremely difficult to unscrew these things. (don't ask me how I know)

I guess loctite won't be a problem on these since they shouldn't need to be removed but i am 99% sure the set i used to have included an 0-ring.

Use teflon tape.

On the NV production racer, they always put a strip of electric tape across th cap after tightening it up.
