Max speed cutout?

I found a good stretch of lonely road today and decided to see how my 961 felt above the ton. It was great, but at about 10 over the ton it suddenly cut the power, as if the ECU said "that's all you are going to get". Does anyone know if Big Brother was involved in designing the bike and it truly is speed limited, or if this may be unique to my machine?

Sounds like a problem , or its not calibrated or just off. You should get nearer to 8000 rpm. What was the rpm may I ask when this cutout occurred ? Try using the lower gears as an indication . I assume the bike is broken in ? See where the rpm limiter cuts in at the lower gears , this way you don't have to go as fast , if you know what I mean.. The bike is capable of more speed and rpm , Norton is being careful..

I have 1500 miles on the bike. I was looking at the speedo and the road, but am pretty sure it was just under 7000. I was of course in 5th gear. I'll try a repeat and pay attention to the tach, and I'll also run it up in 3rd & 4th to above 7000 & see what happens. Thx

In 5th gear as read from speedo , if your ECU lets it spin to 8000
3000 rpm - 50 mph
4000 rpm = 67 mph
5000 rpm = 84 mph
6000 rpm =101 mph
7000 rpm = 118 mph
8000 rpm = 135 mph

I never hit 135, but I did hit roughly 125 with plenty of meat left on the bone. (pretty ballsy, TonyA) So you either have a rev limiter problem or possibly the ECU. Time to buy me a full face.

In my opinion, this bike likes it! It is a real pleasure letting this thing stretch it legs. And my bike is stock ... No new map , no new exhaust . As delivered by Norton to MCC Chicago... As Stuart once said " Twist It .." I wish I could remember who told me that . Maybe Richard-7 ?

Here's a quick update: I ran the bike to redline in 3rd and 4th gears. In both cases, the rev limiter started to cut in at 7800 rpm. The rev limiter is a choppy, stuttering sort of cutout, not at all like the abrupt cut of power I experienced at 110. I then ran it to 110 again and it did not cut out, but I ran out of road to take it further. Perhaps the ECU needed a little "training" or something - at least I know it will reach the proper redline without issue. Anyway, I'm going to try another run at 120+ soon and will post the results - assuming a successful landing!

Good work Bob ! Your rev limiter description sounds correct to me . Post the results when you can . Not to worry , the bike is stable. Fill the tank with good gas , drain the air box and check your tire pressure before the big run..

Yup, Stuart told me to "TWIST IT, Don't be afraid" at the NORTON CANADA LAUNCH..
