I have checked a few threads on main bearing removal, and although I see a number of comments regarding the tool used, they are only the "you can get that anywhere" type.
What is "that", and where is "anywhere"?
I understand the nature of the tool, but what size is needed, and where can you get one that has a suitably sized extractor part associated with it(meaning the bridge and extractor screw, etc).
All the ones I am finding are flimsy looking small things, that I seriously doubt would work.
Any ideas?

Yes about any of these all work on similar sized races as Norton.

If you use a bearing splitter like the one pictured above make sure that when you tighten it up that you stop short of it touching the snout of the crankshaft. It will mar the surface in a spot where you don't want to do that. All you want to do is get some purchase on the race. You might be able to get a hold of the splitter with a large gear puller, or you could use two long bolts and a plate on the end of the crank. The plate doesn't have to be metal, it could be a piece of wood. The parts store i go to lends out bearing splitters.

Its nerve wracking to me cranking in the chisel jaws but that only moves race a bit off seat, then normal puller is threaded in the holder and cranked on to work race off. I heat the race too of course to help ease my nerves.

The ideal size would be a 5" but a 4" or 6" will work too. ITC or Snap-on will cost $200.00 plus for the 6". I'm not sure how durable the china ones are. A lot of force is being exerted here on the thin area of the dish and on the threads.

Here's another thread on the subject:

I used a dremel tool. Ultra carefull not to nick the crank. Let's be honest ,the only reason you want to pull is to replace with Superblends. Stopped short of touching crank ,a little heat and voila !
