What nonsense!

Taking a few quotes from the memoirs of a past prime minister of a foreign country and blaming that person for the later failures in another country is ludicrous.

Even if it’s true that your leaders did base their actions on Thatchers words (which I do not believe is so) THEY still have full RESPONSIBILITY for THEIR ACTIONS... no one else does.

I believe it’s a dangerous modern trend we have these days that so many people look for other reasons / excuses for the outcome of their own actions.... “it’s not my fault I raped her, she was showing too much leg”... “it’s not my fault the house has been re-possessed, it’s the mortgage companies fault for lending me too much money” ... “it’s not my fault I’m a murderer, its because I had a bad childhood”... etc, etc.

Its the snowflake culture. And I despise it. Our actions are our responsibility. Period.

Its crooked - not bent! Why is it crooked? We had Jerry builders here long before anyone thought of the word.
Believe it or not the espression Jerry built is based on a 19th century perception of the quality of German goods..

In Australia most of our laws are based upon standards which are created by the committees of Standards Australia - the committees are comprised of engineers and scientists. The trend towards self-regulation might save builders a few dollars in the short term. But in the long term, the chickens come home to roost. Most entrepreneurs seem to be scam merchants. In recent times, there has been moves to enforce qualification control and improvement upon building engineers. But that won't solve the problems. The source of the problems is the developers who lead our politicians by their wallets. They pay the local council inspectors to look the other way.

The free market takes care of everything ?

When Maggie Thatcher thumped a copy of Hayek's 'Consitution Of Liberty' down on the table at a Conservatives' convention, saying -'this is what we believe' - she simply proved she was a right steaming nit. They should have slapped a straight-jacket on her straight away. There IS an alternative - COLLECTIVISM and ALTRUISM.

Individualism ? - 'no man is an island'. A team is always more effective than an individual. There IS such a thing as 'society'.

I wonder exactly which dictionary you have got that from - it's exactly the opposite of most of the dictionaries on the web! . . . . .

Check out the last sentence

Jerry-built first shows up in 1869 in a glossary from the Lonsdale region of Lancashire, England, and the expression is said to have originated in nearby Liverpool. There are all sorts of explanations for where the jerry part came from, with some even taking it back to the Bible (either from Jericho, whose walls famously came tumbling down, or from the prophet Jeremiah, who made predictions about things falling apart). Others say there were two brothers named Jerry who ran a building firm in Liverpool and whose work was notoriously shoddy. Still others imagine a relation to French jour meaning "day" (since day workers are considered to be sloppy craftsmen). But for all we know, the jerry in jerry-built could have started off as a corruption of the jury in jury-rigged.
(We do know that there's no connection to the use of Jerry as a pejorative nickname for Germans, since that didn't arise until World War I.)

OK I'm no lexicographist but I can see how the meaning of words can change- the modern teenage fad of describing someone as "wicked" and "sick" proves the point. During WW2 the German petrol container known as the "gerry can" were much superior to that of the thin tin cans that the Allied forces were supplied with and were highly prized (and still are). The description of jerry buit as built quickly and cheap & nasty in the modern dictionary at my disposal leads to a lot of confusion. . . . Hence It's all designed to confuse the majority of the population!

Not from a dictionary but from

The Decline of German Mandarins: The German Academic Community, 1890-1933
Ringer, Fritz

a very serious and good German -American Historian

Unfortunately I do not have a copy of the book and any notes I may or may not have made at the time have long since been subjected to the gnawing criticism of the mice.

but wikepedia

" The compound word "jerry-built", a similar but distinct term referring to things "built unsubstantially of bad materials", has a separate origin from "jury-rigged." The exact etymology is unknown, but it is likely linked to earlier pejorative uses of the word "jerry", attested as early as 1721, and may have been influenced by "jury-rigged."

I think the issue which gave rise to it becoming a popular expression were German toys and goods made from tinplate which flooded the market and replaced more expensive but substantial wooden ones

The use of Jerry in ww1 is said to derive from the shape of the German helmet which resembled a Jerobaom (a piss pot) Yet the shape of the helmet predates 1914 , as did Anglo German rivalry, so it could have been attached to matters German long before

Sister in law lives in emu plains and loves it after 30 odd years. She met a 10 pound pom who comes from her home county of Kent. Brother in law is a full blown Aussie now with the straight talking wit i expect. First meeting I asked the question , fancy a beer. Answer was ... King too right mate. I wish we were a bit more like that, instead of being pussies. Too worried we may upset someone.
" King too right mate "???? Not an Australian .

70 odd years old and still not accepted as a Aussie. Can't please everyone I suppose ! Maybe he will send his legacy back here from the land of milk and honey he's called home for over 50 years. Brumby ! Beer is the only answer, king right !

Tony Abbott was a ten pound Pom. The Brits can have him back any time they like. When I visited the UK, I understood why many Australians used to call it 'home', when I was a kid. There is something very familiar to me, about the UK. I love it. However I would still rather live in Australia, even though my house is full of smoke. I don't like California - it does my head in.

Margaret Thatcher was from the era of privatisation which might be regarded as selling utilities or institutions payed for by the tax payer to the private sector.
A bit like someone buying a taxi then paying to ride in it... It made for some instant cash to throw at national debt but of course when the profit making entity is sold so is the income from it.
Short sighted.

Privatisation followed through to not only Australia but New Zealand also.

Michael Palin, Chris Tarrant and the rest were never seen riding in one of these, I wonder why?

Because like politics they were done to a script.

That guy speaks fluent Russian for starters so can go where many can not and can talk to real people in their language.... Funny and informative and likes Vodka along with his sidekick.

One of the reasons I like these video's is I also have an interest in that period where the Leonid Brezhnev era was ending as Ronald Reagan's was beginning.
How can we forget the Cold War, manned missile silo's in the Mid West and and the same in the Soviet block.

My Grandad went out as a £10 Pom (although I thought it was £5) with family, inc their some who was to become my Dad.

He didn’t like it, and came back home to his old job down the coal mines in the north of England !
