Hi All -

Checking thread histories on the search tool above, I don’t find any recent updates regarding the M Unit and wiring harnesses for the Commando. I have a couple friends who are now rewiring a /5 BMW using this method as the headlight harness is a nightmare. Seems to be something that has caught on with the airhead BMW guys in general.

The M Unit approach has my interest for lots of reasons, not the least of which is the ability to track down wiring issues quickly and the use of a circuit breaker approach to resetting. It can be used with either positive or negative ground.

Anyone have experience rewiring a Commando utilizing an M Unit while maintaining positive ground? I am very interested in the process and any results.
My MKIII is in need of a new harness, and I would like to evaluate this possibility.

Thanks!
Tom

My Mk111 too , particularly the headlamp harness. So will try this M Unit idea once others post.

What happened to your wiring harness that it needs to be replaced?
Well after looking at this PDF I now know it's not for me (and many others I suspect ). Basically after attempting wiring in my Smiths E-speedo gauge I admitted defeat , when the RH MK 111 lights switch goes to on the main fuse blows. I've disconnected all the wires to it and still no lights. Same story with E-tacho. She's covered up in a snowbank and I'm about to leave to India until springtime. Deal with it then.

The /5 is a logical candidate for the m unit since it uses the most problematic headlight wiring board. Impossible to install, very tight to work around and once the contact points get worn the main power contact goes intermittent.

My next project is a Moto Guzzi V1000 custom. I’m going to keep the power train, frame, wheels, forks and brakes. The m unit blue looks perfect for start from scratch wiring.

They are negative earth only unless there has been a recent change. The manual on their website (version 2.4) still notes negative earth only.

I'm part way through a re wire of a Guzzi Lemans, original wiring harness had been hacked multiple times and even a small fire at some point.

Believe they only work with negative ground as the "inputs" are searching for an earth to activate the output.

Significantly simpler wiring, no requirement for fuses or relays, keeping high currents out of switch gear etc, plus some flexibility in settings on how things like your brake lights, blinkers (auto off etc) plus and alarm.

If you haven't bought it yet I would recomend the munit Blue version, makes set up a 5min affair,

I wired my 70 Commando with the MUnit Blue, neg ground.

Very easy to install with many built in features including relays and alarms.

The MRide app is also useful.

I highly recommend the MUnit.
