I very much like the look of the low mufflers and header pipes, with no upsweep. I see the diagrams in my parts book ... part numbers appear to be identical to upswept pipes. Wot am I missing?

L.A.B.

The parts book I was looking at is from a CD_ROM about Nortons, I don't have the CD in my pocession at the moment to verify who published it, it is available from all of the major part outfits. I would guess the same parts book as Old Britt links you included in your post.

It appears that I was thinking of the "Roadster, Balanced Header Pipes", reference #'s 6, Part # 063999 and 7, part # 064000. I do not see the mufflers that I was thinking of. Not real happy with the balanced pipe idea, thinking they would likely crack, leak or rattle, or all three at the same time.

The low mufflers I spotted on a couple of pics from the Picture page on this web site. They appear to be more or less straight sided, not at all like the pea-shooters. I didn't like the prominent seam that appears in the photograph.

The two into one into two Dunstall pipes orignally on the bike may still be available ... parts stored all over the county ... assumming the Dunstall's haven't turned to perforated rust since 1975 ... never much liked them at the time. Made doing a simple oil change an ordeal.

I like the idea of unbalanced header pipes, with non pea-shooter mufflers. Just do not want to spend the money for custom exhust system.

Any thoughts on this idea? Thanks for the help by the way.

OK, now I understand.

What I thought you were referring to was the low level Interstate exhaust system.

However, from the photo it seems you mean the early Commando Fastback exhaust system which was discontinued during 1970 when the Fastback got the upswept peashooters.

So you need the '68 - '70 parts list which can be downloaded from here.
http://www.eurooldtimers.com/eng/manual ... 1970-.html

You will also need the specific mounting hardware etc.:

There's no reason why you can't use unbalanced pipes if you prefer them.

Having glanced through the pics page on this site, looking examples of low pipes - which seem to be few and far between, I am beginning to entertain the idea
of the Viking 2-1-2 exhaust header with megaphones. I have owned the Dunstall 2-1-2 and did not much like that system, yet running the pipe along the centre line appears to grab more ground clearence and possiblly allow a longer straight section of pipe leaving the exhaust port.

I will need to make up my mind if I want a sedate, dignified Interstate or one able to attack the twisty bits. I'm getting too old for this, or perhaps I just realize how long shattered bone take to heal.

Yes, you saved me some frustration! We really haven't done more than begin stripping the old girl for cleaning. I have an mental image of where I want to go with the Interstate. Not interested in returning to the Cafe racer theme, too many examples these days, and the legs no longer bend quite so easily as they did in '75.

Despite looking at other ideas, I keep comming back to the low pipe theme, I think it may go very well with an Interstate tank. Flattish sort of bar, chrome fenders, with or with out stays, solo seat of some sort. As I recall, the Commando was never a happy bike two up anyway.

I like this forum, I learn something everytime I look in.
