Original exhaust with balance tubes. Last time is was touched was probably 20+ yrs ago. When I had it off right side side flange was cracked and worn thin. Exhaust nut must have been a little loose and vibration got to it. I fit it in with high temp permetex and it think the split collar.

Yikes! on the exhaust nut you used the permatex?

High temp silicone RTV, I put a ring of it where the exhaust flange meets the head. I not concerned with the silicone, that should break loose. I am worried that the flange would be so thin it would no longer be usable. I would hate to break everything apart to find out I am just experiencing "normal " wear and tear and then have to replace my exhaust.
It looks like a rebuild might be in the future, I just don't want to start it now and be down all season.

Whew, I thought you were talking about a high temp thread locker type of material. In my first post I mentioned drain plug looked like that for a few seasons 'till I go around to rebuilding it. Absolutely no damage had been done to the crank, bores,(though I went .020 over just as a matter of course to bring the clearances up to spec) or pistons. The main bearings were smooth and perfect so reused them too. My point is don't fret over it, easier said than done I know, but in the end when you do decide to split the cases a cam and followers will be all you need unless at that point you want to go farther. Also you may find not all the followers bad and in need of replacement. Out of the four I reused three of them after resurfacing.

And it may not be the cam at all but my gut feeling when I see that swarf all of a sudden and not just after a rebuild I'm thinking cam.

Biscuit,

Either tomorrow or Thurs I am going to pull he sump plug and check the screen. Pull valve covers and check adjusters, valve tip, rocker motion and rocker spindle thrush washers (per johntickle). If I like what I see I will attribute the material to normal wear and not worry too much about it. I will monitor the magnet and see what happens. Between the magnet, sump screen and oil filter I don't think anything will be recirculated. The odds of something getting kicked up into the main bearing and crank journals seem to be slim (I think?).
