I know steel tanks have been discussed here ad nauseum, but I want to get the latest feedback from you guys. I'm replacing my original fiberglass roadster tank in the very near future and I'm trying to decide between the Commando Specialties tank for $250 or the Emgo tank for ~$400. If you've used one of them, what was the initial product like? Any unexpected issues? How has it held up over time?

Has anyone here used both? If you have, which would you go with? I'm not putting together a show queen, but I do want it to look good.

I've just painted a CS tank for a customer, and compared to the EMGO it's very noticeably out.
CS recently posted on Facebook that the difference is because they'd based their tank on a fibreglass original, not a steel one.

The Olde English response to this would be 'Bollocks'.

The front of the tank was also a bit wobbly near the seam just above the coil area, and the CS tank is made from thinner metal. EMGO is heavier gauge than original, CS probably similar to original.
The CS cap fitted fine though, and is definitely useable, but anyone who knows what an original tank looks like will spot it straight away.

Price-wise I'd say they're both priced about right.

The EMGO tank is identical to the original in shape, although the seams are not as neat.
The CS one lacks definition around the knee recesses, and the sharp edge around the top rear is just not there.
Also the tunnel recess at the rear is smaller on the CS tank, but I don't know if this is an issue.
CS tank looks more bulbous from most angles, but may hold more fuel...

CS on left, EMGO on right.

Incidentally - anyone need a JPN 850 non-Electric Start Roadster paint set (EMGO tank, A-N sidepanels)? The bike it was intended for has moved on, so they're surplus to requirements.

I have had both ….CS was leaking tin can emgo much thicker steel, better shape, no leaks, but needed 'skimming' with filler on top surface due to manufacturing marks to get perfectly smooth foundation for premium paint job...my vote for latter as I count former as waste of money based on experience..

Call Geoff Carrigg he bought and installed the Emgo 2-3 years ago. On his yellow commando.

I got one of the CS tanks on sale for $200 plus shipping and, for the money, I am fairly satisfied. It doesn't have any leaks, but, as some have said, the definition of the shape is not very crisp. I just sprayed mine with gloss black primer so I could start using it. If you wanted to have it professionally painted, it would take some judicious modelling with body compound to make it look better. I might attempt the reshaping myself and spray it with rattle cans. However, if/when I decide to spruce up my Roadster with new paint by a pro, I would buy one of the Emgo tanks and keep the other as a spare with possibly an alternate color. (I have two spare sets of fiberglass side covers.) The Emgo tanks, as said, have a better sculpted edge on the knee recesses than the CS. Check out Mr. Alan Hodge's post with photos of his beautifully painted tank.

Thanks for the info. I'd definitely prefer a nice looking tank. I made the mistake of getting an Indian tank several years ago and it was a disaster. Now that my rebuild is actually making progress, I'd like to get a tank that not only functions but looks correct as well.

CS made in Pakistan. EMGO Taiwan. Falls in line with much of the existing debate on the forum.
