When I built my 850 Featherbed in 1980 I got my exhaust made by a local muffler shop that had a mandle bender, he made the pipes tucked right into the frame and as high as they can be and upswept past the rear axle, got them chromed as the chrome shop was next door, I rode it with straight throughs for a week or 2 before cutting down to fit short unrestricked mufflers, I am still running these same header today after 34 years of hard riding and have never scraped them in all these years of hard riding through the twisties as well my foot pegs sit up high so no problem there.
