Just installed my Amals after having them sleeved. New gaskets, needles and jets. Followed Bushman's carb tips on setting it up, but have since backed off the idle speed screws. It has been on trickle charger since the last time it was started, over a month ago, and it ran fine. Problem now is it kicks back on almost every kick while trying to start. I think I may have the advance up a little after I installed the Boyer last year, but has started and run fine since I put it in, kicking back occasionally. Any suggestions on how to proceed will be appreciated. Right now my leg is sore and I am calling it the 400 pound gorilla in my garage!

Re: KICKBACK ON STARTING ATTEMPTS.

James, highly likely your ignition is too far advanced, maybe the boyer plate moved?

Why not put a strobe light on it and verify 30 degrees before TDC mark at a blip up to 5000rpm, going off memory of the boyer instruction

if no strobe available then retard the timing inside the points cover a little until it stops kicking back

Re: KICKBACK ON STARTING ATTEMPTS.

Thanks, I was thinking of retarding it a bit. I can't strobe it until it runs.

Check your battery that it has 12.5 or greater volts. The analogue boyer box likes to see that voltage. If you loose a cell in the battery your advance curve goes wonkie in the boyers.

Get a Pazon, it won't kick back.

Re: KICKBACK ON STARTING ATTEMPTS.

Hi,
I agree adjust timing a wee bit. Just for the record even a pazon will kick back if incorrect timing. I have a pazon and yep if u are not on the money u will get kicked. It doesn't take much just a ..... hair will make a big difference when starting your machine.

Problem solved, motor wasn't grounded. When I installed the DT headsteady, just before I yanked the carbs, I didn't properly ground the motor as it was before I started. I remembered in my earlier head steady post that someone suggested that they had made a new ground running from the lower engine mount to their frame, or battery connection. So, that's what I did, and she fired up, no kicking back. Life is freaking good! Danged! Seems the lack of ground caused my Boyer to go wonky, and advance its spark. Anyhow, just gotta get those carbs adjusted and take her for a spin, see how that DT works out. Thanks for all your help, those that responded to this, and my head steady post, you helped me to think it out.
