Kick-starting bikes after full knee replacement

It’s really good news that they take that approach these days actually.

I still have a limp that comes back whenever I’m tired, cold or had a drink. And a chronic shoulder issue. Both injuries were years ago. And I am adamant that these chronic issues are due to NOT having adequate post recovery physio at the time.

Once your body heals in the wrong way. That’s how it stays !
Jep. I smashed my left ankle in an industrial accident when I was 19, and after the plaster cast came off basically they said to me " Thats it, off you go". Not a word about how to motion it or exercise it, physio-what?
As a result, I have rather restricted movement of the left ankle joint, it hurts first thing in the morning or when the weather is cold, and I'll never own a bike with a left side kickstart. Was never keen on running anyway, but that's been impossible since.

Mind you, I don't complain, came bloody close to losing the whole leg and that would have been been a bugger!

Yep I have had an Alton on my commando for sometime
But I have 3 kickstart only bikes.
Get a paddock roller starter like the one presented here at Accessnorton the other day. If there is a need for starting while underway you have to rely on help, or find a suitable downhill !

The scarrs of life's battle are just beautiful and the persons behind coping with their scarrs are to be admired. Physical perfection is for babies and sissies. :)

Yep I made myself a paddock starter a few years ago when my knee first started going
Then I fitted the Alton
I'm not sure it'll turn over my BSA b50 because I tried bump starting it down a hill in fourth ,it just locked the back wheel up

I wonder if a relatively inexpensive and portable way to solve this would be a Flattracker style starter adapter off the crank end and then use a high quality portable impact. No idea if that's enough torque though. Probably a dumb idea - I got tons of them!

I have heard of someone running an xr 750 on the road who carries a cordless nutrunner/drill in their rucksack for starting purposes ?

I had a stupid accident many years ago. I was riding a mini-bike without wearing a helmet and with moccasins on my feet. My brother had built the bike. It had a 200cc two-stroke engine and very small wheels. I rode it at about 25 MPH and it stood up and because of the small wheels, came down and went from underneath me. I slid down the road, keeping my haed off the bitumen. I had almost stopped when the toe on my right foot caught the road. My leg twisted and a piece of bone was broken off within the joint. I walked on it for about a year, but eventually it brought me down when I tried to kickstart a hot T120 Triumph. During the operation they found the piece of bone was attached to both cartleges through the knee. So they had to remove one then turn me over. I had to learn to walk again, But i had no trouble kick starting a bike. I just do it slow. Bring the piston up to compression then give it a quick shove over the top.

So as it turns out 12 weeks since my full knee replacement I can kickstart my b50 into life!!
Not tried the commando yet but will do as soon as I can get to it
I returned to work yesterday to find my work ' colleagues ' had put some packing under one end on my work bench to make me think I had one leg longer than the other :D
I should add my bench is 14ft long 4ft wide

Haha. My workmates are similarly mischievous (that's forum friendly wording).

Glad to hear you're 'back' :)
