I have a steel interstate tank on my 73 750 commando. I was wondering if anyone knew if it was double sided or not. Thanks Ken

I'm not quite sure what you mean by: "double sided"?
Do you mean, does it have separate internal compartments (for 'main' and 'reserve' fuel, perhaps) or did you mean something else?
 
One metal sheet formed unless someone piled on thick damage material. Each side deep enough to make about 2 half gallon separate to drain dry. No internal baffles so watch the fuel slosh about half empty.

My steel interstate tank has a baffle. Were they installed on later bikes?

I probably should have said "Does the interstate tank have a inner and outer wall?" I have a small dent in the tank and brought it to one of those dent specialists that work on cars to remove small dents without ruining the paint etc. When he put his "dent tool" inside of the tank he wondering if the tank had a inner wall that was stopping him from feeling the dent.
 
Huh, interesting findings I jumped gun on. Ya might take to x-ray facility or could dunk in water to measure displacement then fill up tank to subtract and if much difference that's the volume space evidence of a double. If not connected to fuel space maybe enough air tank would still about float if filled with water in a bath of water. Many DC's have Kilowatts beam power enough to image the tank insides as whats a few mere layer of sheet metal compared to the grit of large people though the hips. Some might be easy talked into a fun test image. Hm come to think of it there are x-ray images of Commandos but don't remember what sort of tank or if resolution good enough.

That looks like a forward/aft baffle to me ??, Weird.... The question may have been "anybody seen on of these in a commando tank ??".. Is it an "original" tank or an aftermarket copy/replacement tank..... Is it fixed/solid, does it move??........
 
I have seen references that the baffle was a later add-on to the steel Interstate tanks so not all have them.

Mine is an original tank (I acquired it in faded OEM paint before the Vintage Vendor nicely resprayed it a few years back). From what has been mentioned it must be a late tank, my '71 glass roadster tank having melted long ago. The baffle is fixed.

To answer Ken's question, it is single-lined.....one sheet of metal. Maybe your body man isn't used to thick steel. :D
 
Boy oh boy what a way to baffle cap splash leaks as seems would cause more splash out on fill ups than bouncing gas inside. If should of been spring hinged so pump nozzle could stick down a bit inside. All my 3 cycle tanks steel and glass fiber only look nice d/t layers of bondo over crash smashes.

Oh, it's not an issue. The two-dimensional image is a bit of an optical illusion. The baffle is further away than it appears. I have no problem with a fuel nozzle.
