I pulled the air box out of my 'new' 1975 MK III and replaced it with standard slip-on filters. But when I put it all back together, it won't start. It will fire a couple times, but not run. Using the tickler buttons does cause fuel to flow, and I installed new spark plugs just to make sure. I'm guessing that somehow a carb jet got plugged, or something like that, while I had it apart, and I'm going to take it back apart to look for issues. But I admit that I'm not sure what to do with the manifold balance tube that previously attached to the oil-tank breather apparatus. Should I plug it, or let it breath, or what? It started OK and ran pretty well before my doctoring, and the only change I made was the filter (I also tried starting it with no air filter at all), so I can't imagine what the problem would be other than some Amal 932 carb issue.

Use a short piece of hose and connect the nipples. You will probably have to adjust the idle mixture screws and idle afterwards.

Exactly right.

On earlier bikes the nipples are just joined to each other by a short hose (my '67, '69 and '73 are hooked up this way). Without those nipples connected, you've got a massive vacuum leak.

You could also leave the original tubes in place and put a rubber nipple plug on the 'tee', but a piece of rubber hose is simpler
