I really don’t like insurance renewal time. My insurance is due on 1st March and I’m currently with Carole Nash who have just quoted me £770 to renew for my KTM 1290 Adventure, ‘74 Commando and ‘69 Bonnie. £300 dearer than last year and last year I had a 1290 Super Duke in addition to the above. I’m 56 with full no claims live in a low crime area and I don’t have any convictions. Anyway this is usual for Carole Nash and I had the ‘you’re having a laugh’ discussion with them and they then lowered it to £560, I’ve been with Carole Nash for over thirty years, have never claimed and have had this renewal attempted rip off every year for probably the last five years but never to this extent, so I told them I wasn’t going to renew with them.

I called Bemoto for a quote and have paid £440 with agreed value for the Norton & Triumph, full RAC breakdown cover, full European cover, legal cover, riding other bikes and helmet/leathers cover. Basically the same benefits Carole Nash offer plus helmet and leathers cover which CN have a further charge for.

All is now good :)

I stopped using Carol Nash because of their inertia tactics at renewal, you should not have to ring them up and ask for last years price, they should offer it at renewal. I then went to Footman James and then once they started the same tricks I then went to Peter James who in 5 years has never increased by more than £2.

I always never renew when they try these tactics, it only encourages them to try it every year.

Carol Nash owned by Private equity

Peter James owned by Peter James (who sold Footman James, got bored so set up Peter James)

I think it is the same with all insurance companies on renewal - it must work for a significant number of customers or they would stop doing it. Bennetts and MCE have tried the same with me over the last few years - a quick internet search with compare the market brings up the same companies with lower cost so I just quote those and they match. When I enquired Bennetts told me that insurers will discount their prices to attract new business and the internet search considers you as new business

I had my fleecing...ahh er uh renewal 12/01/19 so good for a while. I recall liability being $30 per annum back in the old days for my 850. Now it's old and not quite so natty and I carry the whole caboodle along with the price.

Dave, did you insure your KTM with Bemoto on the same policy ?

kommando, does Peter James do mixed modern / classic policies ?

I’ve also been with Carol Nash more years than I can remember, but have had renewal hassle with them too. I continue to use them simply because they do a version of what we used to call a ‘rider policy’ and I can add / delete bikes USUALLY without fuss.

One of the most annoying hassles though was when I removed a bike... and the policy INCREASED! Their twisted logic was that the bike I removed was the ‘main bike’ on the policy, removing it meant another bike became the ‘main bike’ and it was more expensive to insure. After arguing that this was utter BS, and that I had never chosen a ‘main bike’ and that it made no difference to which one I rode, or how often, they eventually relented. But the whole episode just struck me as a chance to try and fleece a very loyal customer.

These are the conditions, must be at least 20 years old

  • The motorcycle(s) are owned and registered to the Policyholder (Main rider)
  • All riders must hold a Full UK (or equivalent) motorcycle licence for at least 12 months nor have been banned from driving during the past three years.
  • No one rider has more than 2 fixed penalty driving convictions
  • No one rider has had more than one minor accident in the past three years (minor being where total costs did not exceed £5,000)
  • The motorcycle(s) are aged 20 years or older
  • Social domestic and pleasure use including commuting to one permanent place of work for the policyholder only
  • The maximum value of any one motorcycle should not exceed £15,000
  • The maximum value of all the motorcycles in total should not exceed £30,000
  • The motorcycle(s) are registered and garaged in Great Britain
  • You must not be a resident of Northern Ireland, The Isle of Man or the Channel Islands

Yes I did, I've looked at insuring the classics and new bike separately over the years and I've always found it to be more expensive.

Thanks, I’d not heard of them before to be honest, but I’ll be contacting them when I get closer to renewal time for sure !

I saw them at the bike show a couple of years ago and they seemed actually interested and I have to say they are a pleasure to deal with, you still get all the insurance script they’re obliged to trot out but other than that they are more ‘conversational’ than other insurers I’ve dealt with. The guy I dealt with Emailed me back after receiving my agreed value photographs and said he preferred my Bonnie... gave me a smile.

In the US I insure with Hagerty’s. They won’t insure anything newer than 25 years, but three bikes full insurance costs $325 / year. Easy to deal with.

I was also insured with Carol Nash for many years, even in the old days speaking to Carol herself. I got so fed up with the increase in premium year on year that I switched to Hagerty. They were so easy to deal with, knew the products and really competitive. Last year at renewal time I spoke to Carol Nash insurance just to get a comparison and spoke to one of their so called specialist sales persons about my collection of bikes. I was asked on each bike if it was diesel? I rest my case.

That doesn’t surprise me in the least :)

Hi yep just had my quote from C. N. been with them donkeys, got my classic car with them as well, some buddies at W. A. C. (Worcester Auto Club) have been using R. H. Insurance, so buzzed them and they quoted £98 for my Commando and XT250 against my C. N. quote of £200.same conditions ect, so no contest it seems, will be going the same way with my TR6(car) when it comes up.

Been insured with Carole Nash for ages too. Rang them to query a few renewal details and discovered they now take the renewal payment 6 days before the renewal date and you can't make any changes from that point.

I'll be looking for an alternative next year!

My CN classic insurance renewal has gone down by £32 this year.
