Any members recently imported a bike from US to U.K.?

I’m just looking for any advice or learning points I can get…

My own research concluded that unless you're bringing a container load in, it's not viable - unless in exceptional circumstances (i.e. $5k Triumph Hurricanes etc.)

I've done it about 5 times Nigel, all single bikes except did a pair once. I'd do it again if I had any room left in the garage. I used to work on the assumption of price in dollars is pretty much price once registered in the UK in pounds, but that was when a GBP was actually worth something., I.e about 3 prime ministers ago. Also obviously depends on the price range as there's some fixed costs in the process.
Used Kingstown shipping every time so Google them and get a quote, if you want a conversation about it after that then ping me a message?

This past week I priced up shipping bikes from Los Angeles to Southampton. The range was from $1000 to $1400 for single bikes. A 20ft container could hold 8 Commandos and that was $6K. as I recall, because they were British bikes the import duty was only 5%

That’s great info, thanks.

Plus VAT, so 20% unless you apply for the reduced rate of 5% based on it being a rare and historically significant vehicle. A 1965 T120R I imported in 5 boxes got that by pointing out it was a US market variant not sold directly into the UK market  .

Just as an aside (if applicable)... Try and get it sent as a complete bike. When I bought the P11 in it had many 'new' parts with it that the vendor sent separately.
I had to pay duties etc on this package and then prove to customs that they were already paid for as part and parcel of the bike cost/duties already paid.
A lorra lorra f*cking about!!

Not quite correct anymore, they don't have to be rare or British, just 30 years old (IIRC) and fundamentally standard. When I first imported a Triumph Hurricane I submitted a lot of evidence for the rarity aspect and even then the shippers were surprised I got the 5 percent vat rate. Then there was a well publicised court case where a car nut who was a hot shot lawyer took on the DVLA and won (or something similar, might have been the judge who was the car nut). Anyway, upshot is pretty much any old, standard vehicle now qualifies. I've actually imported 8 bikes now I've totted it up and no issues with 5 percent at all.

Forgot to say, that vat is payable on the vehicle AND shipping costs!!

Use the right forwarding agent and some of the shipping costs can be zero rated, from a hazy memory this will be all freight up to the container leaving the dockside in the exporting country. By paying this separately and direct to a non UK company there is no VAT to pay. For small shipments a forwarding agent would not bother but for a regular full container customer they will.

Agreed, I've used various companies for getting the bikes to various US ports and never had any vat on that.
The first bike I ever imported (a '68 bonneville) I stupidly crated using a crate from a friendly local BMW dealer in San Francisco as I rode it around california on holiday after purchase whilst staying with a mate. Once I got back home I couldn't find anyone to shift it and ended up using a bunch of ex marines who shifted pianos and suchlike for a living! Lesson learnt, all been roll on /roll off in a container since.

Hope your price of $1000 - $1400 @ bike from California to England was correct! I can'nt get a bike shipped from west coast to east coast of USA for that! From Denver CO to Harrisburg Pa was $850 after a discount to pick up at terminal not to my door ( got tired of waiting for them to schedule home delivery) three years ago!

It's correct. I got a few quotes. To move bikes in the US I have used Uship with great success. I typically wait a few days for the quotes to come in then schedule the delivery. I bought a Triumph T25SS a few months back - MI to CA for $350.
