I've been thinking about ways to secure the ignition switch on my '73 roadster since I changed from stock Amals and air filter (with ignition switch bracket already provided) to a Mikuni with a K&M filter. This now leaves me looking for a place to put the ignition switch. The wire leads are too short currently to secure the switch horizontally on the battery box. I was just wondering how people have been addressing this. I have a couple of thoughts on how I might do it but would love to hear maybe some better ideas. Thx

in this thread I showed everyone what I did. I had to re-wire from scratch anyhow, and needed a place to put a POd-tronics, a 4 circuit fuse block, and a new ignition switch. so here's what I did. I have to say, I kind of stole the idea from a Norton i saw at the Brit Bike meet in Auburn , Ma on june 1st.

I teach woodworking and my next door neighbor is the metals guy, so I fabricated this case to hold all the electronics. I'm pretty happy with it AND with the side cover in place, it's a reasonably weatherproof place.

obviously, if you're using a stock air box, this solution is right out:

I don't see why you couldn't make short jumper wires pretty easily to extend the length of the ignition wires if you neede to.

Slup, remove the accessory receptacle on the right side and replace it with the master switch.

Here's a switch bracket I made out of aluminum stock. Bolted to the front of the battery box:

I too have been fed-up with the stupid position of the ignition switch and after 18 years of ownership have moved it on my 850 MkIIA up to a home-made bracket between the speedo and tacho. It looks neat and works well -I had to obviously extend all of the electricall cabling for this - I also fabricated a rubber cover to keep the rain out. I also fitted a voltmeter rather than ammeter ( a non-standard fitting in any case).

We must be on the same wavelength, mwoo. I just woke up an hour or two ago thinking about that very thing. Good idea on the cover, also.

Yep, if you plan on rewiring your bike anyways, a console-mounted switch would be the way to go. I bought a nice new cloth-covered harness when I redid the wiring so was limited in where I could put the switch.
