I need to remove, and at some time replace my frame ID plate. I have read that this plate is fastened using hammer drive screws. It looks like one way to remove the plate is to grind off the head and punch the remaining stud into the frame. I thought I once read that these fasteners have a head, that accepts a driver, that can be used to unscrew it. So being completely unfamiliar with this fastener, is this thing driven or screwed into place?

Driven. Drill off the head and punch the stem thru. Unless you have the tree's off and bearings out, then you can pry them out from the back.

Both.

You can either take a dremel and create some screwdriver slots or carefully cut the heads off and drive into the stem.

If you don't care about your old plate you can try using a screwdriver under the plate to just pop them out first. 2 of my 4 pryed out easily. Then try the drill or grind

So were these things originally screwed or driven into place, and what is the recommendation to replace them?

I think they were probably driven. The shaft part of the rivet is threaded so when you tap them in they screw themselves into the headstock. They are really short so they won't turn much...

As far as replacements does one size fit all or will I need to look for an oversized replacement to get them to grip?

Hi,
When I drilled mine out I only drilled the head of the rivet to weaken it.
I was then able to knock the head off & remove the plate without damaging it or making the holes in head stock any bigger.
Once the frame was powder coated I just rivited it back on with ordinary rivits.
Cheers Don

Thanks for the info boys! The removal seems straight forward, but I just wanted to ensure I had the right approach before doing any unnecessary damage. I believe those hammer drive screws are still available, but being new to me, I wanted to understand how to install them properly.

I took an old 3/8" bolt, drilled a countersink hole in the middle of the head and used that to seat the drive in rivets. If you just use a hammer, you will flatten them.
