Came back from a ride to discover a missing LH seat knob. I re-traced my route in a vain attempt it was sitting in the road gleaming in the sun at me.

So, off to look for a new one/pair.

This is my (remaining) RH knob. Would it be original?

I lost my knob.

The ones AN are selling have a different pattern...

I've found replacing the factory straight pin with a stainless steel split pin aka cotter pin from the hardware store works well. You will probably need to enlarge the hole a bit.

Pretty sure the straight cut knobs as the Andover ones are the original.
I'm no expert but it is what I remember on my 73 Mk 1 back in the day..

Bonzo,
Check out RGM Motors. They have 3 different knurl styles of seat nuts from which to choose. They also have a stainless version as well. I'm not sure which pattern is original.

Yup , that baby is original .
Did you also lose one of the special dished washers on the loss side ?
I did when mine went flying .
They have to be tight , I have a small rag to help with the grabbing actions of off/on , to protect my baby soft hands from injury .

I tighten it with my riding gloves on. On one occasion, I needed a mole wrench to get it undone. By feel, I've found the sweet spot where it's tight enough and I'm still able to undo it. There is a neat little pin that goes through that hole to stop it departing. Could be an entertaining ride if the seat comes loose!

You are lucky, in 1978 not only did I lose my knobs I also lost my seat too some scum bag, to find out years later the scum bag was a so call mate who was converting an interstate Commando to a roadster and also stole my kick starter lever, he did this when I was replacing the blown layshaft bearing, I wasn't home at the time, the seat was easy to replace but at the time KS were hard to fine, clutch started my Norton for 4 months before I found one, this was the days before the internet.
I had an idea it was my so called mate at the time that stole it but had no proof as he sold the Norton, I never let on that I knew but I got even with him years later and I let him know when he fronted me, it was a brand new leather jacket he sold me but gave it to me and his bank details to put the money into his account, well that paper with the acc details on I just got out the gate before throwing it in the gutter.
That leather jacket still hangs in my shed unworn with my first original worn out leather jacket, it's prob stolen anyway.
I never did replace those knobs I use 2 nuts that are done up tightly, no more 5 finger discounts.

they have Dommie racer old stock at £9.90 each with that pattern.

Damn Ashley, that dude would have been buried in the Pinelands, if he lived around here, along with his leather jacket. Never to be found again.
Well I am not going to do jail time for a scum bag, but he is a crippled old man now and he has no friends from his dealings, so Karma has bit him hard, he has ripped off many in his life time.

Looks pretty much identical, cheers!

Maybe a daft question (but it isn't my first - and doubt it'll be my last), but from the RGM site "064009DR - FROM THE DOMMIE RACER AUCTION"

What is/was the Dommie racer auction?

There are a couple of reasons why the roll pin no longer captures the knurled knobs, allowing them to come adrift.

If the knob is unscrewed all the way, the roll pin will bend, allowing the knob to unscrew past the shouldered end of the shock bolt and then fall off.

If this happens enough times, the shouldered head of the shock bolt which normally retains the knurled knob when it is unscrewed becomes deformed and reduced in diameter. Then the roll pin no longer keeps the knob from unscrewing all the way. I have built up the diameter of the shoulder on the shock bolt with weld or braze and turned it to size.

With or without a functioning roll pin, it is surprising how the knobs ALMOST never loosen off, if the seat is installed correctly.

Possibly the inventory from a the USA dealer Dommie Racer / Accessory Mart ?
They went out of business in 2013 or thereabouts IIRC.
