Anyone been for a test-ride on the Honda NC 700?
A long-stroke [73mm X 80mm] parallel twin, ~ 50hp/45ft-lb, 117mph, 472lbs, 60in W/B.
Both 270 degree crank configured & counterbalanced, [no isos!] & being Honda,[more than a] bit boring.

Wrong forum, JAW. I think you need the "Anything else motorcycle related" department.
Even if you disquise in with a title with "commando" It just does not work.
Sorry and,
Thank you.

Well, to be fair, it was a question, & I`ll bet Honda R & D had a Commando on hand rather than a TX 750..

You did it again didn't ya. Slipped that "commando" right in there.

No, that is not fair. Other than some vague speculation, this has nothing to do with a Commando.

Anyways, how much did you want to bet.

Sorry for indulging, LAB.

A quid, but let me e-mail them first ,so they can give it a polish & tickle its Keihins...

why in the world would you even think Honda would wast there time to look at a 65 year old engine design for a 2012 motorcycle. or for that a 30 year old one. I for the life of me cannot figure out why you are even on a Norton forum

Thanks L.A.B.-no sense wasting "Our Precious Essence" on Honda talk is there?

Similarities between Honda NC700 and Norton Commando (many of them striking):

-2 wheels
-handlebars
-footpegs
-seat
-gas tank
-lights
-hand levers

...the list goes on.

Of course, none of the various bits bear any resemblance whatsoever (with the possible exception of the clutch lever), but at least they are bits on a bike.

Give me a break; a tupperware zoot-scoot is Commando-inspired? I hardly think so. Much closer to the Triumph (new Bonnie) scrambler.

Major manufacturers of motor vehicles are slowly coming around to the fact that very over-square, DOHC 4-valve engines are best suited to racing and not for practical uses.

Sales and marketing of motor vehicles was fueled for many decades by "win on Sunday sell on Monday". These days however most of the world population does not care so much about that sort of thing as much as transportation value and miles per gallon.

A under-square, low rpm engine will be more fuel efficient for the torque it produces and will be more reliable to boot. It will offer all the power that the majority of riders will want and can use and will require little R&D to develop compared to Desmo, oval-piston, titanium racing replicas, and will pass emissions testing much easier. It is a win-win for everyone involved.

Maybe Honda has lurkers here and has come to realize how popular the Commando still is...

You might be right. But if Norton can't build a Cdo then I'm sure Honda can't. BTW that video clip is f'n hilarious!

Strangely enough, only a few weeks ago, an old friend called at my house enthusiastically waving a Honda NC700 brochure, eager to hear what I thought about the NC700 and if it was it any good. He seemed rather disappointed with me when I said I knew absolutely nothing whatsoever about the "NC700" and I'd never even heard it before that moment.

If only I'd known then that it was a Honda Commando copy!

(Not that it really mattered-as his wife who was with him at the time said he wasn't having it anyway!)

HERE'S the first picture to show what Honda's NC700S, NC700X and Integra look like when their bodywork is stripped off – the all-purpose chassis and engine that is at the same time a street bike, an adventure bike and a scooter.

OK, so this is actually the 'X' model. It's suspension is slightly higher than the others. The Integra gets different bars and loses the footpegs, too. But the rest of it is common to all three bikes despite their very different external appearances.

This is the most extreme use yet of the 'platform-sharing' idea that's been commonplace in cars for decades but is only now – thanks largely to the declining bike market – being seriously taken on by the big bike firms. Other recent examples include the likes of the new Kawasaki Versys 1000 – a Z1000 under the skin – but none of the others manage to make such a disparate range of models from so many common parts as the three new Hondas.

Whether or not the auto gearbox and the NC700's other ideas take off, the concept of platform sharing is here to stay.

Couldve had this .

They obviously Copied a Commando , as a decent one would have a CB 750 in every respect , bar durability .
Intrestingly Yams TR wotsit was the better of their two superbikes , Haga had won two superbike wotsits on it
and the FZer wasnt as good , but they thought more profitable .Silly mugs go for this ' sophistication ' lark .

Durability wouldve been the whizz bangs downfall if they got any real power outy of their twin though , die cast scrap metal isnt that strong .

If youre going to mess with dies , youd do a real job and FORGE it , or cast it out of Magnesium .Use a melted down Halifax undercarrige leg . should be enough .

If we fitted Honda engines to these ( cb110s ) we could start a new ' Uni ' Grand prix Class . :)

I am not suggesting that Honda has literally copied the Commando, Blind Freddy could see that [not purblind bull tho`] but the feel, which has always been way more interesting to me than their bloody buzzing blowfly inline 4s.
I gather they had an original on hand, & they are still waiting on delivery of their 961...

Sorry boys but the closest modern copy of a Commando are the rubber mounted rod linked separated gearbox air cooled push rod torquey twin American motorcycle. On the other hand them 1600 cc Triumph vertical twins have some upgraded Commando character.
