Hi All,

I had my rear wheel re-built and I think there may be a missing spacer or washer because I can't get the axle nut tight without binding the wheel. I think I might be missing the speedo spacer. Here are two pictures of what I have on the right side. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've been through this, it may be that you have the spacer #29 reversed, but maybe not. It's hard to figure because you can't see things while you tighten up everything. I'd suggest tightening up the spindle on the hub without the swing arm and see if you can see what's binding. You can use some spacers or washers in place of the swing arm.

A HARD solid bind? No turning? Are number 24/25 new? they provide a jamming (albeit gentle) effect when new. The brake/drive hub side sequence of assembly has a potential for a shoulder to catch, IIRC (  ) you want to re-visit/verify that.

It looks like the speedo spacer (#34) is deformed. I suggest replacing it with a new one. I think you will find there will be a difference in the two.

The bind is very tight when the spindle is tightened even moderately. I think the speedo assembly is tightening against the hub disk cover (#42).

Just leave the speedo gearbox off. Use a washer for the gearbox substitute, It will still tighten up and then you can see if that's what is making it bind or not.

thanks all, for your advice. Have to do some domestic things (ya know how it is), so will continue figuring this out toward the end of the week.

Just to state the obvious, Did you make sure the two drive pins went into the appropriate slots???

Ok. The speedo gearbox is rubbing against the hub cover (rear hub disk #42) when the axle is tightened. I ordered the speedo spacer (#34) cause it was missing. Hopefully that will do the trick.

Those speedo gearboxes are pretty soft metal, it may help to press the center in towards the center of the bike, but a spacer will help. I've got mine somewhere around 1/4" away from that cover. You can't see in there anyhow.

I had to swedge flat the holder for the felt seal on the inboard side of the speedo drive for clearance.

The problem is that the speedo gearbox is rubbing on the rear hub disk. It seems like the lockring should be further away (to the right) to keep the speedo away from the hub disk. Could I need a new felt washer behind the lockring?

Another question. I just received the spedo spacer (#34) because that part was missing. Is that spacer supposed to slip into the speedo gearbox? Because it does not. I'm wondering if I have the wrong speedo gearbox for this bike.

You may think your old top hat spacer is not there. It fooled me. Here's what it looks like.

Here's what it looks like from the inside.

But I keep telling you guys, the metal around the top hat spacer is so soft, the gearbox for some reason gets pushed next to the hub cover. All you need to do is bend the gearbox around that top hat spacer to move it out away from the hub. That felt has nothing to do with it. Here's all the parts, but mine is missing the inside riveted spacer.
