Joe,
I used some Dupli-Color spray cans with some pin striping tape on my side covers and clear coated them.Worked out fine.Daily driver
i hear ya! my riding buddy has to be the "Rembrandt of rattle cans" - he's more into triumphs, but i've got to say, his paintjobs are outstanding. as you know it all in the prep - finish with careful colorsanding cut, buff, and polish. i haven't done any serious painting in years, but i've done my fair share. as a matter of fact, i must have a dozen spray guns out in my shop - everything from an iwata air brush to upper end iwata HVLP's. still have my original devilbiss "old school" suction gun. to be honest, i'd play hell achieving the same results this guy gets with rattle cans. on a motorcycle, i wonder if all the high end stuff is necessary for a daily rider or your "non-concours d'elegance" show bike. (just my 2-cents)

i hope i'm not overindulging but here my po boy paint job and instructions for glass tank i got for $50 i was bored and wanted a project and it was certainly that
Put handful of drywall screws in tank and shake a lot this will score inside so caswells will stick and loosen any flakes etc

Fill tank with water to see where it leaks (water wont rust fiberglass!) mark leaks with chalk

Drain tank

Take JB weld tank weld stick and put it on leaking places wet your fingers it makes it much easier to press into cracks, pinholes and smooth out.

Fill tank again to make sure leaks gone even damp places need attention

Wash out tank with soapy water

Make sure tank is dry and pour in a pint of acetone slosh around and pour out.

Oh I make petcock hole plugs from shaved down wine corks you can plug filler neck with expanding plug for plastic pipes from lowes

With tank totally dry inside (you can use vacuum cleaner hose on exhaust to blow warm air in) Mix the caswells and pour ALL of it in and plug neck

Slowly turn tank every which a way over and over and over to coat inside

Unplug neck Pour out the left over caswells there wont be much

Pull out wine corks and make sure petcock threads are clear

Paint

Scuff the gelcoat with 600 wet or dry paint wont stick to gelcoat it’s too slick

Wipe clean with something like simple green and paper towels

Spray several coats rustoleum high build filler primer and let dry overnight

Sand primer with #600 with plenty of water til its smooth

Wipe again

Spray several coats Duplicolor Universal Black and let dry for a couple of days

Wet sand with #600 and 1000 and plenty of water to remove orange peel (I had a lot)

Wipe and spray with clear I used duplicolors new 1K product it is (allegedly) gas resistant (there are youtube videos about it)

Let dry several days then sand with 1000 and 2000 with plenty of water and then rub with turtle wax rubbing then polishing stuff them Meguires liquid polish clear in red bottle

Stickers

I got mine from restoremoregraphics on ebay his name is gary he knows paint and bikes and stickers

WIPE AREA WHERE STICKERS GO WITH RUBBING ALCOHOL OR THEY WONT STICK!! I learned this the hard way the silicone in the rubbing compounds has to be wiped off

Wet sticker area with spray bottle with a drop of soap in the water

Spray the tank lightly and peel the backing off the sticker and spritz the sticker lightly

Place sticker and take a credit card wrapped in paper towel and squeegee water/bubbles/wrinkles out of sticker

Carefully peel off the sticker paper

That’s it !

Materials lots of sandpaper JB weld tank weld sticks pint of acetone caswells kit 1 can primer 2 cans black 1 can clear rubbing compounds

Total for tank, materials, stickers, and pair of Punjab side panels I painted in similar fashion= $300

for the tank/panel combo on bike now $400 emgo tank $125 english side panels $800 ford ruby red metallic ‘pro’ paint job total over $1300
