head steady bolts stuck in head

Hey guys-
First time poster here. I had a 70 that my dad has had since about 73. It's been sitting in my garage for 6 or 7 years waiting for me to do something with it. It's pretty clean overall and I currently have it torn down to just motor and trans in the frame. This leads to my problem. So far all of the fasteners have come apart easily, but the three allen bolts for the head steady are seized in the head. I soaked them down yesterday with some PB blaster (first time I've had to use anything to loosen fasteners on the bike), but I'm afraid that the threads are galled. Any tips to deal with this?

Welcome to the forum. Try using a little bit of heat. Use a soldering torch around the bolts. The aluminum will expand and the bolts should come loose.

And a small impact driver can help, too.

If you are going to heat the head , get some loctite freeze & release .
I have had good results with it .

Thanks for the input guys. I pulled the motor (together with trans/rear cradle) out of the frame last night so I will have good access to those bolts. I am hoping I don't pull the aluminum threads out when they finally do release! Is it common to have to heli-coil these threads on the Commando?

Don't be too concerned about pulling the threads on those screws, it is very easy to insert helicoils, time serts, etc. and repair them. If your bike is anything like most, this will be a minor difficulty.

No more than any other.

But if you do, they're (or at least originally would have been) 5/16" - 22 BSF.

Anybody else used this stuff with good results? How does it compare to using heat to remove corroded fasteners?
