Halcyon 820 Mirror - Loose Stem

Hey, there. I just installed a Halcyon 820 bar end mirror on my 850. The stem that attaches to the bar mount won't tighten enough to enliminate free play. I'm reluctant to torque the screw any further as I'm already getting quite a bit of resistance. But it just doesn't want to fully tighten up. Anyone else experience this? Is this just the way it is? Thanks!

Dunno, I didn't have a problem. You might have to loosen the main bolt and tap everything farther in. There are two pieces that fit inside the bar that are cut at an angle. As the bolt is tightened these slide against each other and expand against the inside of the bar. Make sure these pieces will slide - no burrs. The ID of the handlebar could be too big?
I thought the mounting method was nicer than the cheap bar end mirrors.

Thanks, no it's not the mount on the bar, that's fine. It's the stem where it attaches to the mount.

I think it stays somewhat floppy. I have mine adjusted so I can rotate it out of the way in tight spots or in the garage.

Actually, mine can be rotated as well. Maybe that was the intent with the design. I won’t have the bike on the road for a while, does it vibrate a lot making it tough to see the image?

I think it is spring loaded with detent positions. I'm able to see OK without vibration and I have the tiny mirror. This was with EU type low bars filled with gray rubbery damping matter. I went back to my original stock bars but haven't been out yet this year to try them out. Hopefully this weekend I can go for a blast.

There is a small grub screw that you tighten against that bolt once you have the spring tension how you want it. You need to loosen that before tightening or loosening the Allen bolt and then nip it up. I've spoken to a couple of people who complained about that bolt coming loose and didn't realise there is a grub screw to secure it.

You need the spring tight enough to stop mirror wobbling but loose enough so you can fold it in.

Mine has some free play (ie is loose) between the handlebar section and the stem. In use it gives me a clear image.

Any better than the stock mirrors? Mine vibrate at low speed to the point where they're useless. Once the isolastics kick in they're OK but below that they're just a blur. Maybe I'll start another thread for that.

I don't like the look of the standard long stem mirrors which screw into the controls, and have never used them so am unable to compare. Have bar-end Halcyons on the Commando and on my 3 British singles and am quite happy with them.

Have these mirrors on three of my bikes. You have to fiddle with how tight that screw is. If you dont need to fold in the mirror I find it has less vibrations. But also have a similar mirror that uses a rubber bung inside the handlebar and that
has the least vibration problem of all. It came with the bike years ago so dont know the mfg, maybe Napoleon?

Iggy is right on with his info ... have used exact same mirror for years , no issues once set up for season , I have Euro bars and can see rear view clearly while underway or stationary ...

That little allen screw is easily overlooked. I put up with a loose mirror for a year or so! DOH---

Yes, Napoleons or Napoleon knock offs.

Interesting how things vary. I removed Napoleons from my ES2 and fitted Halcyons. The Napoleons buzzed so much i couldn't see a thing out of them, the Halcyons are spot on.

I use bar end or long stalks that vibrate at idle. Others are to look at your own elbow....LOL
Since my combat quits vibration by 2000 rpm they are OK for me.

Big difference is that the knockoffs aren’t rubber mounted.

I see it! I hope I didn’t damage anything trying to tighten things up. Thanks, that’s just what I needed to know!

Adjustment criteria for my stalks is how much of my elbows are in view
