Greta Thunberg and the climate

And let's not forget that other favourite, Bitcoin.

Bitcoin's energy consumption 'equals that of Switzerland'

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-48853230

Its from July last year and as the algorithm gets harder to solve the energy needed increases.

Facebook has a data facility 15 miles from me. A giant fortress really. The reason it's there, a coal fire electrical plant right down the road. Best bang for their buck on electricity. Can't imagine how much electricity is used on social media alone?

From a quick look at wikipedia:
The Medieval Warm Period (MWP) also known as the Medieval Climate Optimum, or Medieval Climatic Anomaly was a time of warm climate in the North Atlantic region lasting from c. 950 to c. 1250.

Bernhard, you're slight off in your dating of the Medieval period :)

Again, lifted direct from the net:
In the history of Europe, the Middle Ages lasted from the 5th to the 15th century. It began with the fall of the Western Roman Empire and merged into the Renaissance and the Age of Discovery.

Frozen Thames starts as early as 7th century, you read the thread.

In the not too distant future renewable energy (electricity) will be cheaper than any of the fossil fuel produced electricity.

There was a time when light by kerosene was much cheaper and certainly more available than light by electricity.

The advise I would give to the anti progressives is to not stand in the way of progress. You’ll be run over, or at best, left out in the cold.

Which is medieval, agreed, but it was not what you quoted :)

No matter, the original post was off the wall anyway. The expert grandpaul was citing seems to belong to the 1% or so who disagree with warming.

There seems to be a reluctance among some here to realize that fossil fuel will, in all likelihood, not be a fuel of the future. I surmise some think they will be legally prohibited from riding their Norton if renewables become the source of power for vehicular motion. I doubt that would ever happen. Although, the price of gasoline may be $100/gallon in the new age.

There are going to be a lot of expensive paperweights !

Pretty much the same as keeping and feeding of a horse today. Very expensive. The horse was once the choice of transportation, today relegated to a cherished hobby. So goes progress.

A ride buddy of mine pays to board his wife’s horse which she rides on nice Saturday mornings only .... he say cost of horse and upkeep far out distances his cost to buy and keep his BMW 800 .... also I switched from burning hardwood for home heating to a propane appliance last year while the propane is more costly than the wood , it is cleaner, less work than wood plus it less than using electric heat here , although I do have electric baseboards installed as backup / supplemental heat .... too bad North America decided against Nuke generated power ....

Is that the plan?
Make bikes/cars as expensive as keeping a horse and then convince everyone to save money by buying the horse....
Zero carbon emissions and fertiliser for your flowers!

I once read somewhere that horse riding was the most dangerous form of transportation when you look at the miles traveled and the amount of injuries to riders
I'm not sure if this is true but who knows

I read the same, the number of riders killed or injured falling from a horse is a higher proportion than any other form of “transport”

Yup , my wife also owned a horse before we had children , one Mother’s Day She (Jo) and a friend after some Mateus wine decided to go tandem bareback , ended badly for Jo ,she ended up in hospital with broken shoulder , sold Queenie shortly after ....

I like the horse riders who ride on the road with a warning notice on their back saying to

'Drive past slowly as the horse is of nervous disposition'

Sort of giving you the grounds for asking why they ever thought it sensible to take the animal out on the road in the first place.

In a similar vane (no pun intended) it costs the National health service £14 for every £1 raised through charity parachute jumps in the sheer amount of injuries

It’s not a plan it’s, in all likelihood, a reality.

When IC engines are replaced by electromotive, or other, there will be no market for gasoline other than for the IC engines used as a hobby. Gasoline will then become much, much more expensive.

Mid to high 50's projected for entire month of March in NYC.

20 degrees higher than normal.

Great for motorcycling, but definitely troubling...
