Now I have a 5 speed Quaife box in my Dunstall 810 (only covered 2000 miles from 1972) and although it works, well, it can seen quite temperamental, tricky to select needs a really good prod with the toe. Is that Neutral? Im new to Commandos so can you take me through the "Lets get it set up perfectly" rigmarole?
Many thanks
Brian

Although there are significant differences in the Quaife box c/w OEM, I believe the parts under the outer cover are very similar - and may be your problem.
The gear selection "positivity" is, I have found to be, dependent on how well the ratchet spring is set up.
The Oldbritts document "Assembling the commando gearbox" covers this in the last three pages - may help you (it did me!)
PM me with your email address if you'd like a copy.
Cheers

A long shot I know, But if somebody has re bushed the inner and outer covers and not reamed these in alignment, then the selector shaft will bind. Also seen the same issue when people have had the outer cover chromed (?).

If it is hard to get neutral and into gear, your primary chain (or belt) might be too tight. Better too loose.

And of course you may have some clutch drag!!

Eliminate this stuff, then go back to the box and pop that cover! ;)
Plus one there! Clutch drag was was a major contributor to my 850's hard shifting.
