Gearbox markings

Following the engine crancase markings thread, I got to wondering if originaly all P11 gearboxes were stamped on the top lug with a P11 prefix. I have owned two 67 P11's, the first one did not, but maybe it had a gearbox change at sometime. My present P11 does?

Mine had the P11 prefix. Did the N15, G15 and AJS33 have their own, too?

The number on the gearbox of the 1967 P11 parked in my garage is prefixed with P11.

All P11 & P11A and maybe P11A Ranger had this stamping. The last of the breed - P11 Ranger 750 - had serial number stamping transverse on the shell, not on lug. Maybe this was a legal US requirement introduced at the time.

Where is the lug located on the gearbox? The number on my gearbox is across the top of the shell. My serial number for the motor and frame are supposed to be for a 1967 P11 according to a huge database of Norton serial numbers I looked at.

Yes that is exactly what and where the stamp on my gearbox is like. Smaller P11 followed by the larger numbers. It is in the right location for a '67 P11. I was thinking a lug was something specific like a raised flat spot in the casting for the serial number. Lug is not used for indicating mounting locations on the exploded gearbox diagram I have. I'm not fluent in Euro Nortonspeak.
