having rebuilt the gearbox and followed the advice of a well known Norton engine builder. I greased the inner and outer paper gaskets on assembling. I now have a pool of oil if left on centre stand. My question is what would you use on paper gaskets to seal.gearbox mating surfaces are flat and nuts are tight.looks like gearbox apart. Many thanks John. Norfolk

I use Permatex high-tack on both sides of a paper gasket. The red stuff in a rattle can.

I use Wellseal. Probably no need really, just ‘belt and braces’ but old habits and all that ...

When you strip the box , if its not from Kstart shaft seal and running underneath the most likely cause is that a gasket has folded on assembly. Cant remember now its so long since I worked on the Box ( failed sleeve gear bearing ) but I think I assembled it dry

The kicker O-ring can be upgraded to a proper seal. I would wipe down clean everything then refill then put down rags and a catch cup to determine where the leak is from.

As noted, it's not the gasket material. If it's leaking past the gasket, it's likely that either the gasket tore or folded on installation or the mating surface of the parts is damaged/nicked/warped.

As far as gasket sealer - any of the common products will work just fine...as will completely dry. The sealers can fill some flaws or slight warpage in the parts but if everything is true, they are not necessary. OTOH, gaskets themselves are not necessary for most parts if you want to use something like Yamabond, Permatex Moto, etc. You have to be a bit careful about that because on some occasions, the factory gasket is part of the clearance for certain applications.

yes I did that ... do not remember the oils seal part no but it was a modification that came vis the good offices of the US Norton Owners club ..

I have just had my AMC 4 speed apart to replace the sleeve gear bushes and bearing , used JS Motorsport silicone gaskets.
Sealed up tight and no leaks

Previously just used a light smear of grease on the original oil paper gaskets, no issues with those.

Paper with Wellseal. Crankcase Wellseal with silk thread. Wellseal is pretty close to Aviation Permatex at least by
sight and feel.
Next case job will be with one of the Yamabond type glues. High Torque gray Permatex seems close to this stuff.

If you rebuild your gearbox on a rag on a bench, be careful that you don't get anything caught up between the mating faces.
