Problems with my kickstart not engaging.  I assume that the layshaft first gear is the unit that houses the kickshaft pawl. If so, the inner teeth, where the kick start shaft sits, does appear to have rounded edges. Are these normal or is this a sign of significant wear?  There is major wear on the pawl which is what I would assume so as to limit the wear on the gear. When is it necessary to replace the gear that houses the kickstart pawl?

Tom

Tom, sorry to give you the bad news but you must replace 3 items, The pawl (not all were hardened properly, mine is very hard and has an "M" stamped ito the side of it) and the two gears layshaft and mainshaft (as a pair) . You might want to inspect the fragile 1 st. gear bush as well ,even ordering in a new bush as I bet it is breaking up from all the failed kicking attempts. Credit cards so wonderfull...

Or, just try a new pawl (pawl+spring+plunger+pin) first, as it's the pawl that normally wears the most (even the hardened type) and that may be enough to cure the problem? As Torontonian mentioned, changing the 1st gear bush is usually a good idea.

Yes pawl even hand reground might do it for a good while longer but heed the 1st gear -paper thin to start with- bush as ticking away each time kicked on and 1st is engaged. Get two as it goes away about double fast as the others. I now feel guilty to wastful of my fettering future to spend much time in 1st d/t its bush life span.
They require a reaming to fit, like the others, so be prepared equipped for that delaying process. If 1st bush gets thin enough it can let 1st pop out of gear when loads are balanced like just coasting to lean over into your drive way 10 mph and it suddenly looses drag and you dart outward further than expected or rear can even slip right out if on grass or a road fault just then.
