Am re-installing outer gearbox onto 1973 850 and want to mitigate risk of leaks.
Have ordered recommended new gasket (no gasket on original build) but to avoid potential leaks thinking of putting on some Permatex or other sealant. So many kinds! Some articles say avoid silicone types. Some say use Form a Gasket aircraft sealer.

Anyone out there used sealant with gasket or with some recommendations.

Thanks.

The standard gasket is usually just fine. If it were mine and didn't want to worry, use Hylomar Racing Blue. Expensive, but it doesn't stick like the standard crap.

Properly a dry gasket should seal but I had so many opening events early on I ran out of them and was told there is no need of them so now just use Hylomar or such and don't have no shim issues I can tell. Gearbox innately drool out the sleeve gear bush and the kicker shaft unless its seal is tightened up in its groove or area machined for a proper oil seal instead of oil ring. It will leak out excess oil via main/sleeve bush if over filled much above the cogs seen through fill port.

Groove around the kicker is a tad too deep to hold o-ring tight to shaft enough, so followed Michael Taglieri advise to place a strip of folded over cigarette foil in the groove then light oil/grease the shaft and put a bead of sillycon-RTV all around and slide parts together and don't touch over night. I still get some oil mist around it after good runs but no drips. It seals about as well as a machined in seal Anover Norton-Fair Spares did on my hot rod Peel. I got mine pretty right the first time but might take a few trys to refine shim and goop application.
