gasket question

Unless it's a silicone gasket all the paper/fiber gaskets should use a sealant right?

Depends on what it's sealing.

the 8 rocker gaskets?
primary cover?
primary to engine?
primary to chain tensioner?
Gearbox cover?
timing cover?

I use sealant on all gaskets. My choices are either clear RTV or Permatex "high tack" spray (red stuff). Either can be applied selectively with a Q-tip. RTV I use for gaskets that come off sometimes, Permatex for everything else:

the 8 rocker gaskets? - The little ones on the head: Permatex. The 3 valve covers: RTV
primary cover? - Permatex
primary to engine? - Permatex
primary to chain tensioner? - What's a chain tensioner?
Gearbox cover? - Permatex
timing cover? - Permatex

I'll add:
Outer primary - RTV against the O-ring
Intake to head - RTV

cool thanks... the chain tensioner is inside the primary on mk3. When I took it apart it didn't even have a gasket, but there was one in the parts book so I ordered it. Pretty much answered my question unless someone disagrees :| . Thanks again
