I ordered a new gas tank for my '74 Roadster today and a new gas cap as well. Now I need to order the mounting hardware and am confused. I have been doing some reading and looking at parts and it looks like I can use the muffler mount rubber studs on the gas tank. Is this correct? I read it should help prevent cracking.

The tank is supported mainly by the center gasket on the large frame tube and since you have a 74, the strap at the rear. The 'wings' are just there to keep it from falling off. You don't want to put a lot of stress on those wings, so yes use donuts to space it up enough but not put tension on the wings. I actually made a piece of aluminum to brace the wings more. It goes completely across the bottom of the wings. My take.

Unlike pre-'70 models, the 1970-on coil bracket braces the tank mounting 'wings'. (Assuming it's fitted, of course)

As DogT says, you don't really want to load the "wings" much, the weight shd be carried by the pads under the tank along the frame spine.
Although the muffler mounts wd probably fit, I think the rubber part of those is much larger (longer) than you need.
IMO, it wd be better to fit something like the stock rubber washers https://andover-norton.co.uk/en/shop-details/15345/rubber-pad-tank-mounting-92-1242-
using as many as needed to take up the space between the tank (after fitting the frame pads) and coil bracket , and maybe one more.
If you find a Lord mount with a narrower rubber, I'm sure that wd work fine.

I have found it varies on the tank, the exhaust mounts work on 3 Interpol's but you need to test it on Roadsters and Interstates. If they fit they are preferable as they exert less pressure on the tank, after having one stud on an Interstate come loose and start leaking I have them on all my tanks that can take them.

Thanks for the replies. I'll order both the studs and rubber spacers and the exhaust mounts and see which one works best.
